Santa Clara (2-4) vs. Rider (2-4)
GAME NOTES: The first-ever meeting between the Santa Clara Broncos and the Rider Broncs is set for the Orlando Classic on Sunday morning at HP Field House.
The Broncs are aiming to put an end to a three-game slide when they take the floor on Sunday. All three defeats have come as part of this tournament, and the latest defeat came at the hands of Georgia Tech on Friday evening, 61-54.
As for the Broncos, their skid has reached four in a row, following season- opening wins over Cal State Fullerton and San Diego Christian. Two days ago, Santa Clara was held to a season-low 44 points in a 22-point loss to Rhode Island.
Santa Clara shot an impressive 57.1 percent from the field in the first half against Rhode Island, but the team was then held to a grand total of just four field goals over the final 20 minutes, en route to the awful offensive display. Brandon Clark finished with 14 points and Matt Hubbard 10 more, as the duo combined to shoot 9-of-18 from the field, while the rest of the team combined to make only seven more baskets.
Playing just under 33 minutes per contest, Clark leads the program with his 17.5 ppg and is also tops with 24 assists. Jared Brownridge contributes another 11.2 ppg and when combined with Clark accounts for 23 of the school's 39 3-pointers through six games. The squad is scoring just 61.0 ppg at the moment, while giving up 66.5 ppg.
The struggles for the Broncs in the latest outing against Georgia Tech involved shooting only 3-of-19 behind the 3-point line and collecting a mere four offensive rebounds, compared to 19 for the Yellow Jackets. Because of that weak effort on the glass, Rider was beaten in that department overall by a massive 49-26 margin. Matt Lopez, who led the team with five boards, was the lone double-digit scorer with 13 points in the setback.
Lopez has led the Broncs in scoring in each of the last two outings, yet overall his scoring comes in at only 9.2 ppg, partly due to the fact that he is shooting only 50 percent behind the 3-point line. Ahead of Lopez on the scoring list are Teddy Okereafor and Zedric Saddler with 11.3 and 10.2 ppg, respectively.
Both of these squads are having trouble producing on offense, but Rider seems to have more of an issue in that department at the moment, which means Santa Clara should be the favorite.
