Recap: Quinnipiac vs. Oregon State
Hamden, CT (SportsNetwork.com) - Zaid Hearst scored a game-high 24 points as the Bobcats of Quinnipiac held on to defeat the Oregon State Beavers, 60-52, in a non-conference clash at TD Bank Sports Center.
Hearst shot 3-of-8 behind the 3-point line and was a perfect 11-of-11 at the free-throw line for the Bobcats (5-5) as they won for the second time in as many outings. Evan Conti pitched in with 14 points and six rebounds for the hosts as well.
The Beavers (8-3) were paced by Olaf Schaftenaar who dropped in 18 points on 4-of-6 shooting beyond the arc, followed by Malcolm Duvivier with 10 points as the squad had a five-game win streak snapped. Gary Payton II, who recently registered just the second triple-double in program history, was held scoreless and had just three assists and four steals before fouling out.
Both teams had trouble finding the basket in the first half, shooting below 36.0 percent from the floor, yet Hearst still produced 20 points all by himself, compared to 26 for OSU, as the hosts carried a six-point lead into the break.
In the second half Quinnipiac's accuracy from the floor was just 34.6 percent, including 3-of-12 behind the 3-point line, but still it managed to hold on for the victory.
A key factor in the matchup saw Oregon State committing 20 personal fouls, resulting in the Bobcats owning a 15-4 scoring margin at the free-throw line.
