PURDUE BOILERMAKERS

Purdue Boilermakers

Purdue Boilermakers VS. IUPU-Indianapolis Jaguars

IUPUI (0-1) at Purdue (1-0)

GAME NOTES: The Purdue Boilermakers made quick work of Samford Friday night, and they'll try to do the same Sunday as they host the IUPUI Jaguars in a non- conference tilt at Mackey Arena.

IUPUI held strong against Indiana State Friday night in the season premiere, but the Jaguars couldn't battle back in overtime after the Sycamores jumped ahead. IUPUI fell in that contest, 79-66. Now the team heads out on the road for a two-game away test.

Purdue considerably mauled Samford on Friday night in the season opener for both squads, 80-40. Four players recorded a point total in the double figures as the Boilermakers dominated on both ends of the floor.

This meeting between IUPUI and Purdue marks the first time these two in-state rivals will meet on the basketball court.

Last season, IUPUI brought up the rear in the Summit League once again, finishing the campaign with a dismal 1-13 record in league play, which marked the end of the Todd Howard era in Indianapolis. The team brought in former Memphis and Loyola-Chicago assistant Jason Gardner to be the man in charge with the hopes that he can turn around a program that finished near the bottom of the Summit League statistically and also lost three very valuable members of the 2013-14 squad.

The team remained competitive against an Indiana State team that finished near the top of the Missouri Valley Conference standings last season in the Friday season opener, but ultimately couldn't generate enough offense to hold on down the stretch. Marcellus Barksdale led the team in scoring on the night with 12 points, adding three assists and three rebounds in the losing effort. Mason Archie chipped in with 11 points, while DavRon Williams grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. P.J. Boutte came off the bench to score nine points and dish out a team-high six assists.

Purdue's grip on the Big Ten Conference has slowly been slipping season after season, but the Boilermakers really got off on the right foot Friday night when they demolished Samford at home. But the same thing happened last season, when Purdue started the campaign strong and then dropped 12 of the team's final 14 games to finish 15-17 overall. And this season won't be very friendly to the Boilermakers after their top two scorers from a year ago departed in the offseason.

Four players netted double-digit point totals in the win over Samford two nights ago, and the team's defense was stellar in holding the Bulldogs to a minimal field goal percentage. Samford shot just 22.7 percent from the floor in the game, which included 3-for-20 from 3-point distance. Rapheal Davis and Vince Edwards each netted 13 points to pace Purdue, with Edwards adding in eight rebounds. Isaac Haas came off the bench to score 11 points with eight boards, and Kendall Stephens chipped in with 10 points.

After faring well against Indiana State a few nights ago, there may be hope that IUPUI can sustain some success this season. But it's going to take the Jaguars much more time to jell together, whereas Purdue already has a handful of players that are very familiar with one another. Center A.J. Hammons is going to be a focal point for the Boilermakers as they move forward.
