Yale (5-1) at Providence (5-0)
GAME NOTES: The Yale Bulldogs and the Providence Friars put their respective winning streaks on the line Friday afternoon when they square off in a non- conference tilt inside the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Yale suffered a double-overtime loss at Quinnipiac in its season opener, but has since rebounded with five straight wins. The Bulldogs hosted Lafayette on Wednesday and came away with an 82-60 victory.
Providence is unbeaten through five contests, and the team won the Hall of Fame Tip-Off at Mohegan Sun earlier this week with a 75-74 triumph over Notre Dame in the title game.
PC owns an 11-7 series lead over Yale, and has not lost to the Bulldogs since 1949.
The Bulldogs played their best basketball to this point of the season during the first half of Wednesday's game as they shot 59 percent from the floor and buried 9-of-16 3-pointers en route to a 51-28 halftime lead. Lafayette came into that game shooting 50 percent from the floor, but the Bulldogs' hot start, and their 47-20 rebounding advantage for the game, proved too much to overcome. Justin Sears (14.8 ppg) paced four double-digit scorers for Yale with 17 points and nine boards. Javier Duren (13.5 ppg) tallied 15 points and seven rebounds, while Armani Cotton finished with 11 points and 13 caroms for a double-double.
Meanwhile, the Friars shot a healthy 56 percent from the floor in their victory over Notre Dame. Senior forward LaDontae Henton was the catalyst in that contest as he poured in a career-high 38 points on 14-of-19 shooting. He had 18 points by halftime to help Providence jump out to a 39-25 lead at the break. Tyler Harris contributed 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting to join Henton in double figures. That duo has been front and center for the Friars through the team's first five games. Henton is averaging 23.4 points and 5.8 rebounds, while Harris is putting up 13.6 ppg and 5.4 rpg. Both players are shooting better than 52 percent from the floor.
The Friars have won five straight meetings in this series, including a 76-74 win on their home floor last December. But Yale is off to its best start since 1991, so this figures to be a tight matchup. Give a slight edge to Providence with the home-court advantage.
