Xavier (12-6) at Providence (14-5)
GAME NOTES: Both the Xavier Musketeers and Providence Friars will look to string a pair of wins together as they clash head-to-head in a Big East Conference battle at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Thursday.
Xavier put a stop to a two-game slide on Saturday with a 62-58 victory over Marquette at home. The win improved the Musketeers' home record to a perfect 10-0 this season, but they head out on the road, where they are just 1-4 on the year.
Providence picked up a 74-65 victory over Creighton on Saturday, which was the team's second win in its last three outings. The win improved the Friars' Big East record to 4-2. They also sport a 9-2 mark at home as they prepare to host the Musketeers.
This will be the sixth meeting between Xavier and Providence in the all-time series. The Musketeers hold a slim 3-2 advantage over the Friars in the series, although Providence is 2-0 against Xavier in matchups in Rhode Island. The sides split the season series in 2013-14.
Marquette held a convincing 31-22 lead over Xavier at halftime of Saturday's Big East showdown at the Cintas Center, but the Musketeers used a 52-percent shooting mark in the second half to complete the comeback for the win. Remy Abell scored 15 points to lead the Musketeers, while Myles Davis chipped in with 14 points in the winning effort. Jalen Reynolds didn't score a single point in the win, but pulled down a team-best eight rebounds for Xavier, which held the Golden Eagles to 36.8 percent shooting in the second period.
Matt Stainbrook checks in atop the Xavier leaderboard with 12.4 ppg on an impressive 65.4 percent shooting touch, which ranks third in the conference. He's two spots behind Reynolds, who leads the Big East, shooting 65.7 percent from the floor. Stainbrook's team-leading 7.0 rpg mark is fifth in the Big East rankings. Freshman Trevon Bluiett adds in 12.2 ppg as the only other player scoring double digits for the Musketeers, who are netting 77.8 ppg this season (best in the conference) on 49.2 percent shooting from the floor. The team's scoring defense hasn't been stellar, allowing 68.2 ppg to opponents.
Providence was able to take a 10-point lead at halftime over Creighton in Saturday's win after connecting on 48.4 percent of its attempts from the field in the opening frame. In the second half, after not attempting a free throw in the first period, the Friars buries 20-of-27 from the charity stripe to keep the Bluejays at bay. Kris Dunn tallied 21 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to lead the charge, while LaDontae Henton added 18 points in 40 minutes of play. Tyler Harris came off the bench to net 13 points in the winning effort.
Henton has been an absolute beast in his senior season with the Friars. The big man leads the team and the conference in scoring, netting 21.1 ppg on 47.3 percent shooting. He's tied for second on the team in rebounding with Harris, as each player pulls down 5.4 boards per outing. They both fall behind the point guard Dunn, who averages 5.6 rpg, and owns a team-leading 136 total assists. He would be the team leader in all three major categories if it weren't for Henton's scoring output. Dunn tallies 14.2 ppg for Providence, followed by Harris's 10.8 ppg mark. The Friars as a unit are scoring 69.4 ppg, and are surrendering 63.0 ppg to opponents.
Xavier's scoring offense on paper should be able to take down Providence, which has shown an inconsistency on the offensive end of the floor this season. But if the Friars can put up more all-around performances like they did against Creighton, they should be able to take down the Musketeers at home - a place where Providence has been especially dangerous.
