St. John's (11-4) at Providence (13-4)
GAME NOTES: Hoping to bounce back after three straight losses, the St. John's Red Storm will hit the road to take on the Providence Friars in a Big East Conference clash at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
St. John's has taken a bit of a tumble after opening the season at 11-1. Still, an 11-4 start through 15 games is the program's best since the 1999-2000 campaign. It's been over a week since the Red Storm took the court in a 90-72 loss to Villanova at Madison Square Garden.
Providence, on the other hand, has been riding high recently with two straight victories (including a 60-57 overtime thriller against Georgetown), and wins in seven of the team's last eight games. The Friars are 13-4 this season, own a 3-1 mark in conference play and are 9-1 at home.
St. John's holds a 58-45 all-time series lead over Providence, which includes a 32-29 mark versus the Friars as members of the Big East. The Red Storm picked up an 86-76 victory over Providence in their last trip to the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
St. John's and Villanova battled back and forth for almost the entirety of their head-to-head matchup back on Jan. 6. But as soon as St. John's lost forward Sir'Dominic Pointer after he fouled out, Villanova used a dominant performance down low to secure a victory on the road. The Red Storm performed well offensively, shooting 48.3 percent from the floor. D'Angelo Harrison netted 25 points to pace St. John's in the loss, while Phil Greene IV chipped in with 14 points. Pointer had nine points and four blocked shots before he fouled out of the contest. The Wildcats were allowed to shoot a blistering 55.7 percent from the floor in the game.
Harrison has been sensational for the Red Storm this season, as the guard enters Wednesday's clash netting 20.6 ppg to lead the team, second in the Big East. Harrison's game is well rounded, as the senior also averages 6.1 rpg and has recorded 27 assists. Rysheed Jordan (13.1 ppg), Greene (11.8 ppg) and Pointer (10.7 ppg) round out the group of double-digit scorers for St. John's this season. Chris Obekpa leads the squad in rebounding at 8.1 boards per outing, though Pointer's mark of 7.2 rpg isn't far off the pace. The Red Storm are averaging 71.3 ppg this season, and giving up just 62.6 ppg to opponents.
In a battle that essentially went back and forth all game long (10 tied scores, 12 lead changes), Providence emerged victorious over Georgetown thanks to a strong overtime performance that saw the Friars shoot 3-of-5 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. LaDontae Henton continued his dominance for Providence, netting a team-best 19 points (10 of free throws) with seven rebounds. Kris Dunn contributed 16 points with nine assists, and Carson Desrosiers nearly had a double-double of nine points and 10 rebounds. The Friars won despite shooting just 3-of-15 from 3-point range.
Henton's stellar senior season continues as he heads into Wednesday's matchup. The forward is averaging a team-high and conference-best 21.2 ppg, adding in a providence-high 5.6 rpg. But it hasn't been all Henton for the Friars this season. Dunn has replaced Bryce Cotton at point guard exceptionally well. Dunn is averaging 13.6 ppg, and has dished out 119 assists with 42 steals to lead the team. Tyler Harris rounds out a trio of double-digit scorers for the Friars at 10.6 ppg. Although the team's lineup is well-rounded and the Friars have been winning games, they check in with a 69.1 ppg average, which ranks last in the Big East in scoring.
St. John's has had over a week to try and pull itself out of a mental funk following three straight losses. That should be plenty of time, but Providence isn't going to roll over and let the Red Storm come to the Dunkin' Donuts Center and take an easy win. The battle between Henton and Pointer should be fun to watch.
