Recap: Portland vs. Oregon State
Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Gary Payton scored 12 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as the Oregon State Beavers captured a 65-58 overtime contest against the Portland Pilots in non-conference play at the Chiles Center.
Victor Robbins led all scorers with 18 points off the bench for the Beavers (5-2), followed by Langston Morris-Walker and Olaf Schaftenaar with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
The Pilots (6-2) were paced by Bobby Sharp and his 12 points, although he shot just 3-of-13 from the floor, followed by Alec Wintering with 10 points as he converted a mere 2-of-9 from the field.
Both teams had trouble finding the basket in the first half as OSU hit on only 9-of-27 (.333) from the floor and the Pilots 7-of-24 (.292), yet it was Portland that led at the break by a 30-24 margin.
Early in the second half the lead grew to seven for the hosts, but Oregon State chipped away and even took a 53-51 advantage in the final minute on a jumper by Robbins. However, with just under 30 seconds left in regulation, Wintering converted a layup to knot the score at 53-53 and send the meeting into overtime.
During the extra session Portland scored just five points, allowing the Beavers to pull away for the victory.
In a game that featured nine ties and eight lead changes, the Pilots converted a mere 5-of-24 beyond the arc and 27.3 percent from the floor overall.
