Oregon State (4-2) at Portland (6-1)
GAME NOTES: The Oregon State Beavers have dominated the all-time series against the Portland Pilots, and they'll look to improve on the one-sided history as the two sides meet in a non-conference clash at Chiles Center.
Oregon State put a stop to a two-game skid with a 74-50 lopsided victory against Mississippi Valley State Wednesday night. The Beavers started the season 3-0, but dropped two consecutive contests to Oklahoma State and Auburn in the MGM Grand Main Event in Las Vegas.
Portland is off to a very hot start, entering the battle with Oregon State sitting on a 6-1 record. The Pilots are coming off an 83-71 victory against cross-town rival Portland State, which directly followed their first loss of the season, a 70-55 defeat against Valparaiso.
Oregon State leads the all-time series against Portland, 51-16. The last meeting between the sides occurred in the 2008-09 season, and the Beavers have won three of the last four matchups over the Pilots, including two in a row.
Oregon State didn't have the most spectacular day offensively, as the Beavers connected on 39.7 percent of their attempts from the floor in the 24-point win. It was the team's defense that made a significant difference, holding Mississippi Valley State to just 29.5 percent shooting in the contest. Gary Payton II notched a double-double with 24 points and 16 rebounds, also recording four steals. Daniel Gomis and Langston Morris-Walker each chipped in with 11 points in the win for the Beavers.
Payton has been spectacular this season, as he leads the team in scoring at 14.3 ppg with a team-best 9.2 rpg. The guard is shooting an impressive 58.6 percent from the floor as well. Morris-Walker is the only other Beaver to sport a double-digit point average headed into the team's seventh game, netting 11.5 ppg for an Oregon State team averaging 67.3 ppg as a unit. Malcolm Duvivier tops the squad with 21 assists on the season, but also has given away 19 turnovers.
Portland connected on 50 percent of its field-goal attempts in Wednesday night's demolition of intra city rival Portland State, and that included a sub- par mark of 6-of-21 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. Alec Wintering scored a team-high 27 points to go along with six assists, while Thomas van der Mars contributed a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds, shooting a perfect 9-of-9 from the field. The Pilots allowed Portland State to shoot 40 percent from the field, but the home squad outrebounded the Vikings in the contest, 44-27.
Kevin Bailey didn't record a point in Wednesday night's win over Portland State, but the guard (who played just 11 minutes in the contest) still enters the game against Oregon State as the team's leading scorer, notching 13.1 ppg on 44.4 percent shooting. Wintering's outburst against the Vikings raised his scoring average to 11.9 ppg, while Volodymyr Gerun checks in behind Wintering at 10.7 ppg. D'marques Tyson contributes 10.6 ppg to round out the team's double-digit point scorers, while van der Mars pulls down a team-best 8.1 rpg and comes in just shy of the double figure scoring mark at 9.9 ppg.
Portland is riding a wave of success this season, and has some strong players that will certainly be able to keep up with the Pac-12 Conference Beavers. But Payton, along with a solid supporting cast for Oregon State, should be able to hit the road and pick up the win with an overpowering defense.
