UCLA (11-8) at Oregon (13-6)
GAME NOTES: The Oregon Ducks will look to put a pair of wins together as they host the UCLA Bruins in a Pac-12 Conference showdown at Matthew Knight Arena on Saturday.
Oregon was victorious on Thursday night against USC, 75-67, which put a stop to the team's two-game slide. The Ducks are now 13-6 this season with a 3-3 mark in conference play. At home they have been dominant, owning a 14-2 mark at Knight Arena.
UCLA was also in action Thursday night, as the Bruins went up against the Oregon State Beavers. The Bruins were defeated in Corvallis by 11 points, 66-55, ending a three-game win streak. UCLA shares a similar 3-3 Pac-12 record with Oregon.
The Bruins lead the all-time series against the Ducks by a hefty 85-31 margin. The sides met three times last season on the court, the most recent being in the conference tournament, which the Bruins won, 82-63.
Playing for the first time in eight days, UCLA went cold in the first half against Oregon State. The Bruins connected on only 23.3 percent of their shots in the opening frame, which included a 1-of-11 mark from 3-point distance. Bryce Alford scored 18 points to lead the team, adding in six assists. Norman Powell notched his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Kevon Looney also tallied a double-double in the loss, adding in 10 points with a team-best 11 boards. Oregon State shot 50 percent from the field in the opening half to take a 29-19 lead at intermission, which out the Bruins in a hole from which they could not climb out.
UCLA's offense certainly hasn't been lacking this season, even after the team lost some critical components of an NCAA Tournament squad from a season ago. The Bruins head into Saturday's matchup owning a 72.4 ppg mark on 41.9 percent shooting, but they also allow opponents to score 69.5 ppg this season, which could spell trouble against a dangerous Oregon scoring attack. Alford leads UCLA with 15.8 ppg and 5.7 apg, though Powell comes close to matching Alford's scoring output at 15.1 ppg. Looney (12.8 ppg), Tony Parker (10.8 ppg) and Isaac Hamilton (10.6 ppg) round out a group of double-digit scorers for the Bruins. Looney chips in a double-double average per game with a team-best 10.3 rpg mark.
Oregon utilized a strong first half on Thursday night to break open its contest against Pac-12 rival USC. The Ducks shot 45.5 percent from the field and held the Trojans to 33.3 percent in the opening frame which allowed the home squad to take a 44-31 advantage into the midway break. The Ducks never looked back as they increased their lead to as many as 15 points in the second half. Joseph Young scored 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds to pace the team, while Elgin Cook chipped in with 15 points and Dillon Brooks added 12. Jalil Abdul-Bassit came off the bench to net 11 points, and Jordan Bell grabbed a team-best 13 rebounds in the win.
Young has been sensational on the offensive end. The guard leads the team and is second in the conference in scoring, netting 19.4 ppg this season on 42.9 percent shooting. He's also dished out 70 assists to lead the squad, and is shooting an impressive 92.2 percent from the free-throw line. Brooks checks in behind Young in the scoring department, adding in 13.4 ppg for the Ducks, who as a unit are averaging 77.6 ppg (best in the Pac-12). Cook rounds out a trio of double-digit scorers for Oregon at 11.9 ppg. The team's scoring defense has seen better days, as it currently allows 70.7 ppg to opponents on 39.9 percent shooting.
Oregon has been exceptionally strong at home this season, and going against a UCLA team deflated from a Thursday night loss could improve the team's record at Knight Arena. But the Bruins are never an easy out, especially with a handful of talented scorers. Still, the Ducks should be able to get going offensively and take down UCLA in this one.
