Detroit (0-1) at Oregon (1-0)
GAME NOTES: The Oregon Ducks will begin play in the Progressive Legends Classic on Monday night when they host the Detroit Titans in a non-league clash at Matthew Knight Arena.
Detroit eased its way into the season with a 77-54 victory over Rochester College on Friday night. The victory was a step in the right direction for the program, which had only 13 wins last season after logging back-to-back 20-win campaigns.
Oregon dominated its season opener as well, finishing off Coppin State by a score of 107-65. The Ducks have been to the NCAA Tournament in each of the previous two seasons and have notched at least 20 wins in each of the last four. They will host Toledo on Friday before traveling to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for two more games in the Legends Classic.
Surprisingly enough, Detroit has won all three previous meetings with Oregon, although the teams haven't hooked up since 1979, when the Titans earned a 71-59 victory.
Despite being outscored, 30-18, from 3-point range against Rochester, Detroit still dominated on Friday. The Titans had a 40-18 advantage on points in the paint, while shooting 53.7 percent from the field overall. They also forced 20 turnovers, which they traded in for 29 points. The dip in competition obviously helped the Titans, who were a weak offensive team last season, scoring only 71.1 points per game on 41.8 percent shooting.
Anton Wilson paved the way to victory for Detroit, scoring a game-high 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including a 4-of-5 showing from 3-point range. Juwan Howard Jr. had a bit more trouble working his way to 16 points, although his 6-of-13 shooting effort was certainly effective enough. Paris Bass produced 13 points off the bench as the team's only other double-digit scorer. Bass was one of a number of reserves to make an impact in the victory, as the Titans owned a 33-14 advantage in bench points.
Oregon was able to do pretty much anything it wanted offensively against Coppin State. The Ducks knocked down 56.2 percent of their field goal attempts, while drilling 14 shots from beyond the arc. They also enjoyed a 49-35 advantage on the glass, while giving up only 10 points in the paint.
The scoring wealth was spread fairly evenly for the Ducks, with five different players scoring in double figures. Joseph Young was the most productive of the group, netting a game-high 32 points. It was no surprise, considering Young averaged a robust 18.9 points per game last season. He did more than score against Coppin State, however, dishing out eight assists to go with five rebounds. Elgin Cook contributed 15 points, Casey Benson tallied 13 off the bench and Ahmaad Rorie chipped in 10. Jordan Bell nearly had a double-double as a reserve, finishing with 12 rebounds and eight points.
If Young continues to score and distribute anywhere near the level he did on Friday, the Ducks will be tough to beat all season.
