OLD DOMINION MONARCHS

Old Dominion Monarchs

Old Dominion Monarchs VS. LSU Tigers

LSU (2-0) vs. Old Dominion (2-0)

GAME NOTES: The first-ever meeting between the LSU Tigers and Old Dominion Monarchs takes place in the Virgin Islands as part of the quarterfinal round of the 2014 Paradise Jam.

LSU is on the road for the first time this season, having recorded two wins against Gardner-Webb (93-82) and Texas Tech (69-64 in overtime), both at home during the first week of action. Depending on the outcome of this contest, the Tigers will also meet up with either Illinois State of Weber State this weekend in the tournament.

As is the case with LSU, the Monarchs are also getting away from home for the first time with this trip to the Virgin Islands. Back at home, ODU defeated the likes of UNC Wilmington (76-66) and Richmond (63-57) during the first two games, the latest of those coming on Tuesday night.

Again, similar to the Tigers, ODU will also be playing additional games against opponents to be determined this weekend in the tournament.

The Tigers had a very shaky start to their meeting with Texas Tech in Baton Rouge the last time out, shooting only 28.6 percent from the field and missing all nine chances behind the 3-point line. But in the end, LSU played well enough to pull off the overtime victory by limiting the visitors to only five points in the bonus session.

Jordan Mickey produced a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds, both game-highs, while Jarell Martin also had double figures in both of those departments with 17 points and 12 boards. Fellow starters Josh Gray and Keith Hornsby also scoring in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Through two games, Mickey is not only shooting 64.3 percent from the field, he is averaging a double-double with 19.5 ppg and 10.0 rpg. Again, Martin is also doing hard work in the paint with his 19.0 ppg and 11.5 rpg. Clearly the team is strong on the interior, so it is not surprising to see that the Tigers are shooting only 23.8 percent behind the 3-point line.

ODU's meeting with Richmond was a little too close for comfort, but thanks to 6-of-14 shooting behind the 3-point line the Monarchs were able to capture the win and remain undefeated after two games. Trey Freeman made all seven of his free-throws as he finished with a team-best 13 points, followed by Richard Ross and Jordan Baker with 12 points apiece. Off the bench, Denzell Taylor chipped in 10 points and pulled down five rebounds.

Averaging 31 minutes per game, Freeman is leading the squad with 18.0 ppg, having knocked down all 15 of his shots at the charity stripe. Jonathan Arledge checks in with 12.0 ppg and 7.0 rpg, the latter helping the program to beat opponents on the glass by an average of 13.0 per contest.

There is a huge discrepancy between how much offense the Tigers bring to the table and what ODU is capable of accomplishing. Assuming LSU controls the tempo of this meeting, the game should fall in favor of the Tigers.
