St. Bonaventure (5-1) at Ohio University (2-2)
GAME NOTES: Off to a 5-1 start for the second straight season, St. Bonaventure tries to continue its winning ways in a game against the Ohio University Bobcats on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
The Bonnies beat Buffalo on Wednesday for their fourth straight victory. A win on Saturday would give the Bonnies their first 6-1 start since the 2000-01 team opened with eight wins in its first nine games.
The Bobcats are coming off a tight loss to Belmont on Nov. 29. Belmont junior guard Craig Bradshaw made a layup with under a second remaining in an 83-81 final at the Convocation Center.
Ohio has won four of the last five matchups, but St. Bonaventure holds a 6-4 lead in the all-time series.
Dion Wright netted 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the Bonnies' 72-63 home victory on Wednesday. Youssou Ndoye tallied a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, adding in four blocked shots for St. Bonaventure. Marcus Posley chipped in with 12 points, and Andell Cumberbatch added 10 with six rebounds in the win.
St. Bonaventure has a very strong starting five, as they all average double figures in scoring, led by Posley with 15.0 ppg. Wright (13.7 ppg, 8.7 rpg), Cumberbatch (13.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg), Ndoye (11.8 ppg, 10.8 rpg) and freshman point guard Jay Adams (10.3 ppg) lead the way for a team that has allowed only one of its six opponents to shoot over 40 percent from the field. SBU ranks second in the Atlantic 10 Conference in defensive field goal percentage (.371). Ndoye, a 7-foot senior center, ranks 12th nationally with 17 blocked shots. Cumberbatch leads the team in assists (3.5 apg). The Bonnies are giving up 62.7 ppg and have been successful despite shooting only 67.7 percent from the foul line.
The Bobcats suffered an 83-81 loss to Belmont last time out. Belmont junior guard Craig Bradshow converted a layup with under a second left to stun the Convocation Center crowd. Javarez Willis netted 25 points for Ohio. Stevie Taylor added 17 points, Ryan Taylor contributed 16 and Maurice Ndour brought down 10 rebounds and came up a point short of posting a double-double.
Willis, a redshirt senior guard, paces Ohio with 19.3 ppg. Ndour (14.5 ppg, 10.3 rpg) and Ryan Taylor (11.3 ppg) lead the team offensively. Antonio Campbell (9.5 ppg) is strong off the bench. The Bobcats are shooting 27.4 percent from 3-point range.
A win on Saturday would deliver the Bonnies their longest in-season win streak (five games) since 2001-02. That team won five straight from Dec. 8 to Dec. 28, beating Wisconsin Green Bay, Ohio, Davidson, Siena and Connecticut. Already with a strong starting five, the Bonnies will be fortified with some depth thanks to the return of sophomore forward Denzel Gregg from a six-game suspension.
