Belmont (5-1) at Ohio (2-1)
GAME NOTES: The Belmont Bruins will look to extend a five-game win streak as they hit the road to face the Ohio Bobcats in a non-conference tilt at the Convocation Center Saturday.
Belmont fell in its season opener to Wright State, 73-70, which turned out to be the only loss the Bruins would suffer up to this point. Since then, the team is 5-0 with a 78-57 thrashing of Denver standing as the most recent victory.
Ohio came back from a loss to Florida Gulf Coast by taking down Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 69-60, in its most recent contest. This matchup with Belmont is the second of a four-game home series for the Bobcats.
These two teams have only met one other time on the court. In February of 2013, Belmont easily defeated Ohio, 81-62, in Nashville.
Belmont held Denver to 36.5 percent shooting from the floor in the team's last outing, and the Bruins got two strong performances from standout players to take the lead and, ultimately, the win. Craig Bradshaw netted 28 points on 9- of-19 shooting, while Taylor Barnette contributed 21 points in the win. Evan Bradds chipped in with eight rebounds as the Bruins cruised past the Pioneers after shooting 40.8 percent from the field. Belmont made an incredible 29- of-32 at the free-throw line in the contest.
Belmont is known to be an offensive-driven team, and that has been the case this season through the team's first six contests. The Bruins are averaging 79.5 ppg so far, and are holding opponents to a mere 68.0 ppg. Bradshaw is the heart and soul of the team's scoring presence, netting 19.0 ppg on 53.3 percent shooting. Barnette is adding 15.7 ppg on 56.9 percent shooting, and Bradds is adding 13.5 ppg on 64.6 percent shooting. Reece Chamberlain rounds out the group of double-digit scorers for the Bruins, netting 10.3 ppg. He and Bradds lead Belmont this season with 6.7 rpg averages each.
Ohio played a standout game defensively against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the team's most recent contest. The Bobcats held the Lions to 32.8 percent shooting from the floor, and forced them into turning the ball over 15 times. Forward Maurice Ndour led Ohio with 21 points and 12 rebounds for the double- double, making a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe. Javarez Willis contributed 16 points, and Mike Laster came off the bench to chip in 10 points in the win. The Bobcats shot 44.9 percent from the field.
Ohio is averaging 68.0 ppg this season through three games, and is allowing opponents to score 62.0 ppg in the same frame. The Bobcats have just two players netting double-digit point totals - Willis checks in at the top with 16.5 ppg, while Ndour comes in at 16.3 ppg with a team-best 10.3 rpg average, adding in five blocked shots. Antonio Campbell and Ryan Taylor are right at the cusp of double-digit averages, each netting 9.7 ppg for the Bobcats.
Even though Ohio has the homecourt advantage, Belmont is simply too strong offensively for Ohio. After the Bobcats graduated top scorer Nick Kellogg, the team has had to look elsewhere for a go-to scoring threat. Willis and Ndour have been solid, but will they be able to maintain the pace?
