NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Notre Dame Fighting Irish VS. Providence Friars

Providence (4-0) vs. Notre Dame (4-0)

GAME NOTES: After picking up wins on Saturday, the Providence Friars and Notre Dame Fighting Irish will square off head-to-head in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Sunday at Mohegan Sun Arena in a non- conference clash.

Providence has ripped through opponents this season, and in four games the team is 4-0, with decisive wins in the last three. The Friars defeated Florida State, 80-54, to get to the Sunday matchup against the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame is also sporting a 4-0 record entering this clash with the Friars. The Irish have handed lopsided wins to Binghamton, Navy, Coppin State and, most recently, UMass, when the Friars doused the Minutemen by an 81-68 score.

This meeting between Providence and Notre Dame will mark the 27th time in history that they have clashed on the hardwood. The Irish hold the all-time series lead, 16-10, and have won 11 of the last 13 meetings.

Providence will certainly be looking to change all of that after the Friars completely obliterated Florida State in Saturday's contest. Providence shot a very healthy 53.7 percent from the floor, adding in a 47.4 percent mark from 3-point distance. LaDontae Henton went on a rampage yet again, scoring 24 points and bringing down 10 rebounds for the double-double. Kris Dunn nearly missed out on a double-double of his own with 15 points and nine assists, while Jalen Lindsey contributed 15 points of his own off the bench for the Friars.

Providence has been dominant in the team's four wins, and is averaging 74.5 ppg compared to just 52.5 ppg for opponents. Henton is the team's leading scorer, averaging 19.8 ppg with a team-best 6.8 rpg average. Tyler Harris is the only other Friars player to average a double-digit point total, scoring 12.8 ppg with a 6.0 rpg mark. Dunn isn't too far outside the double-digit point realm, netting 9.8 ppg with a team-best 32 assists on the young season.

Notre Dame went to work offensively against UMass on Saturday, as the Fighting Irish netted 58.5 percent of their shot attempts from the floor in the 13- point victory. Jerian Grant led the team Saturday with 24 points, adding in eight assists to his resume. Pat Connaughton scored 18 points, but turned the ball over seven times, while Demetrius Jackson netted 16 points for the Irish. Zach Auguste notched a double-double in the win with 11 points and 10 rebounds to complete the strong day for Notre Dame.

Four players are averaging double-digit scoring totals for the Irish through four games played, led by Auguste's 17.8 ppg margin. Grant, after the 24-point outburst against UMass, is right behind Auguste's scoring average, netting 17.5 ppg in four starts. Connaughton checks in at third in scoring with 14.0 ppg, while leading the team in rebounding at 8.8 ppg, and Jackson chips in a healthy 11.0 ppg. The Irish as a unit are scoring just shy of 90 ppg, so Providence may find Notre Dame to be a very worthy competitor.

Providence has the advantage in that the tournament is being played just one state away, so the team's crowd should travel well. But Notre Dame's lineups is as strong as the team will face at any point in this early season. There are too many players to try and limit on the Irish roster, but if Notre Dame can slow Henton, Providence can be stopped.
