Kent State (23-11) at Northern Arizona (21-14)
GAME NOTES: The quarterfinal round of the 2015 CollegeInsider.com Tournament continues on Friday night, as the Kent State Golden Flashes come calling on the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona.
The winner will advance to the semifinals next Tuesday, with the championship game slated for Thursday, April 2.
Kent State's road to this point started with a 68-56 win over Middle Tennessee on March 18, and was followed by a 69-65 triumph over Texas A&M-Corpus Christie on Monday night. As a result, the Golden Flashes own a 23-11 record and they enter this bout having won four of their last five games overall.
Northern Arizona was most recently in action last Saturday as it won at Big Sky Conference rival Sacramento State, 78-73, just three days after opening the tournament with a 75-70 victory over in-state foe Grand Canyon. The Lumberjacks, who also beat the Hornets two weeks earlier, improved to 21-14 on the season, and they've been enjoying a successful run of late, winning five of their last six games and going 9-2 since Valentine's Day. NAU has won seven straight home games.
This bout marks the first meeting between these two schools in men's basketball.
Jimmy Hall, Kent State's leading scorer (15.9 ppg) and rebounder (7.4 rpg) this season, logged a double-double consisting of 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Deveraux Manley hit for 17 points and Derek Jackson added 12 points and six assists to power the Golden Flashes to their recent win over Texas A&M- Corpus Christi. KSU made good on 50 percent of its field goal attempts, going 8-of-22 from 3-point range in the process, while also converting 13-of-16 free throws. Conversely, the Islanders shot just 40.4 percent from the floor, but were successful on 18-of-25 foul shots.
The Flashes, who boast four double-digit scorers this season in putting up 65.9 ppg, were guilty of 14 turnovers while being outscored in bench points, 22-14.
Jordyn Martin scored a career-high 27 points and Quinton Upshur added 22 of his own, joining Northern Arizona's 1,000-point club in the process, as the Lumberjacks slipped past Sacramento State last weekend. NAU, which at one point in the contest trailed by as many as 14 points, shot 78.3 percent in the second half to finish at 54.7 percent for the game. Gaellan Bewernick chipped in 11 points and Kris Yanku dished out eight assists for the 'Jacks, who went 16-of-20 at the foul line, finished with a narrow 31-28 edge on the glass, and outscored the Hornets in the paint, 46-20.
Both teams took very good care of the basketball, combining for only 13 turnovers. Upshur (14.6 ppg), Yanku (13.6 ppg, 5.1 apg) and Aaseem Dixon (12.8 ppg) are all averaging double figures for a team that nets 68.5 ppg despite shooting just 40.8 percent from the field.
These two teams match up well against each other, meaning it will likely be a nip-and-tuck battle throughout. The homecourt advantage can't be minimized, but the Flashes are probably a bit more seasoned.
