Manhattan (1-2) vs. Northeastern (3-0)
GAME NOTES: Both the Manhattan Jaspers and the Northeastern Huskies won their Naismith Memorial Basketball Tip-Off matchups on Saturday, so the two programs will square off Sunday in a non-conference clash at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Manhattan began the season on an 0-2 start after losing preliminary round games to Florida State (in overtime) and to Massachusetts. But the Jaspers got in the win column Saturday with a 78-63 victory over Binghamton, advancing them to face Northeastern.
The Huskies have been red hot to start the 2014-15 campaign. The team picked up a season-opening win over Boston University, and then downed Florida State in the Tip-Off prelims and, on Saturday, took down Navy, 68-44, to advance to face Manhattan.
The two teams have met only twice in the all-time series history, with Manhattan holding both of the head-to-head victories.
Binghamton didn't play all that poorly on the offensive side of the ball against Manhattan, but the Jaspers were able to rattle off a 49.1 shooting percentage in the game en route to scoring 78 points to earn their first win of the season. Shane Richards scored a team-high 24 points in the win, adding five assists to his stat line. Ashton Pankey and Rich Williams each contributed 11 points to the team's victory over the Bearcats, who shot 42.2 percent against the Jaspers in the contest.
Because of his 24-point total against Binghamton, Richards's scoring average on the season skyrocketed, and now the forward owns a team-best 18.0 ppg through three games played. He's only shooting 39.5 percent from the floor, but his scoring average if five points higher than that of Emmy Andujar, who checks in at second on the team with 13.0 ppg. Pankey rounds out the double- digit scorers for the Jaspers on the season with 10.7 ppg. As a unit, Manhattan is scoring 70.7 ppg and allowing opponents to score 73.7 ppg.
Like Manhattan against Binghamton, Northeastern didn't do anything especially interesting to keep the Midshipmen from scoring. In fact, Navy hit 45.2 percent of its shot attempts from the floor in the contest, but got up only eight shots at the free-throw line, hitting just two of them. Scott Eatherton led Northeastern in scoring in the game, netting 19 points with eight rebounds in the win. T.J. Williams was the only other player to score in double figures in the 68-point effort for the Huskies, adding 11 to the cause. Northeastern shot a very respectable 45.8 percent from the floor in the win, adding 16- of-19 from the charity stripe.
David Walker just missed scoring in the double digits for the Huskies against Navy, adding nine points to the team's effort. Despite falling short of his season average, Walker still leads the team in scoring this season with 18.0 ppg on a 60.7 shooting percentage. Eatherton checks in at second on the team with a 14.3 ppg mark, but leads Northeastern in rebounding, averaging 7.3 rpg. Quincy Ford rounds out the team's double-digit scorers at 12.3 ppg for the Huskies, who are netting 71.7 ppg through three contests.
Manhattan was able to get by Binghamton, the America East program, to advance to face Northeastern. But the Jaspers will find that the Huskies are a completely different animal, with a well-rounded lineup and a strong scoring core. The unbeaten streak for Northeastern should continue after Sunday.
