Nevada Wolf Pack VS. Seton Hall Pirates

Seton Hall (1-0) vs. Nevada (2-0)

GAME NOTES: The first-ever meeting between the Nevada Wolf Pack and the Seton Hall Pirates takes place as part of the Paradise Jam on Friday afternoon.

The Pirates are playing just their second game of the season, having kicked off the 2014-15 campaign with a 63-47 win over Mercer last Sunday at home.

The Pack is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2006-07, thanks to a 65-49 victory over Cal Poly in the opener last weekend and a narrow 69-64 triumph versus Adams State on Monday, with both games being played in Reno.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday, pairing off with Clemson and Gardner-Webb.

In the first half against Mercer, the Pirates held the visitors to just 36.7 percent from the floor and 1-of-9 behind the 3-point line, providing the hosts with a double-digit advantage at the break. In the second half, Seton Hall converted a total of just nine field goals, preventing it from blowing the Bears out of the water.

Brandon Mobley scored a team-best 19 points, hitting all four of his 3-point tries, and adding nine rebounds and three assists. Sterling Gibbs accounted for 17 points, five boards, five assists and three steals, while Angel Delgado came up two points shy of a double-double as he ripped down 12 rebounds.

Experiencing a lackluster opener was Isaiah Whitehead who missed all five of his chances beyond the arc and shot a mere 1-of-10 from the floor, finishing with more turnovers (four) than points (two).

Like Seton Hall, the Wolf Pack opened a double-digit lead at intermission in the most recent outing versus Adams State, basically by holding the visitors to only eight made field goals through the first 20 minutes of action. In the second half it was Nevada that struggled from the floor (8-of-23), but still managed to hold on for the victory.

AJ West had a huge game with 17 points and a game-high 18 rebounds, D.J. Fenner accounted for a team-best 18 points and four steals, Michael Perez 12 points and Marqueze Coleman 11.

Fenner is averaging 15.0 ppg through the first two contest, a huge jump from his efforts last season, considering his career average is a feeble 3.3 ppg. West checks in with 11.5 ppg and 13.0 rpg, with his offensive rebound total of 15 being more than any of his teammates has total.

Based on the first games of the season, this is a bout that could easily go right down to the wire. It may be a case of which team traveled the best and that could favor the Pirates being that they are located closer to the tournament site.
