Nevada (2-3) at Nebraska-Omaha (2-2)
GAME NOTES: On the road for the fourth straight game, the Nevada Wolf Pack drops in on the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks for a non-conference clash at Ralston Arena on Saturday.
After opening the 2014-15 campaign with home victories over Cal Poly and Adams State, the Pack went on to bow versus Seton Hall and Clemson in the Paradise Jam, as well as fall versus Weber State earlier this week by a score of 59-56.
The Mavericks are playing at home for just the second time in five games on the season, spending the last three games on the road. The latest outing took the team to Lincoln where the Cornhuskers toppled UNO by a score of 80-67 on Tuesday of this week.
The series between these two teams is tied at one game apiece, with UNO winning the most recent meeting last season, 82-80.
In a game that featured five ties and nine lead changes, the Wolf Pack doomed themselves versus Weber State by shooting only 35.7 percent from the field, including 2-of-11 behind the 3-point line, en route to the three-point road loss. AJ West, who came off the bench for a chance, accounted for 12 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots, while Michael Perez led the group with 15 points and fellow starter Marqueze Coleman tacked on 12 points in the losing cause.
Although he did not finish in double figures the last time out, D.J. Fenner remains the leading scorer for the Pack with his 11.8 ppg, although that is only slightly better than Coleman with his 11.0 ppg. However, both players seem to be costing the team scoring possibilities due to the fact that they are each hitting less than 40 percent of their field goal tries and have combined to make only 6-of-27 beyond the arc.
According to the box score, Nebraska-Omaha led the Huskers by massive 16-point margin just minutes into their meeting, but then fell behind by eight at the break and never recovered. In fact, there was a 31-point swing in the matchup as the sides combined for an unsightly 39 turnovers. Devin Patterson led the Mavs with 20 points, CJ Carter and Marcus Tyus pitched in with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Playing just over 34 minutes per contest, Carter leads the program in scoring with 19.3 ppg as he shoots a solid 45.5 percent beyond the arc, which is actually better than his 44.2 percent from the floor currently. Patterson checks in with 18.0 ppg, converting all but two of his 24 attempts at the free-throw line as the unit hits on 72.4 percent at the charity stripe.
If the Pack can figure out a way to slow down Carter and Patterson then perhaps they'll have a chance, but with the way the Mavericks are scoring points, on the average, it will be a tough challenge for the visitors either way.
