Southeast Missouri State (3-3) at Missouri (3-3)
GAME NOTES: Intrastate foes will square off at Mizzou Arena on Tuesday night, as Missouri Tigers play host to the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks in non- conference action.
Since dropping a pair of games in the LMU classic a few weeks ago, SEMO has gotten its season back on track with wins in three of its last four to pull to 3-3. The Redhawks most recently made easy work of Alabama A&M on their home floor on Saturday with an 85-51 win.
Missouri has also split six games right down the middle over the first few weeks of the season. The Tigers participated in the Maui Invitational prior to Thanksgiving, and after losing to Arizona (72-53) and Purdue (82-61) in the early rounds, they salvaged their trip with a 74-60 win over Chaminade in the seventh-place game.
Missouri has never lost to SEMO in seven all-time meetings, most recently winning 81-65 in Columbia in December of 2012.
The Redhawks had no problem running past Alabama A&M their last time out, as they shot 42.4 percent from the field and 28-of-46 from the free-throw line in the 34-point victory while forcing their opponent to shoot under 32 percent shooting and to commit 19 turnovers. Pacing the balanced effort with 17 points was Jarekious Bradley. Aaron Adeoye (12 points), Jamaal Calvin (11) and Josh Langford (10) also scored in double figures, while Nino Johnson chipped in across the stat sheet with six points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
On the season, SEMO successfully outpaces its opponents by shooting 45.2 percent from the field for 70.2 ppg while allowing only 62.2 ppg on 42.3 percent shooting. Bradley is the unquestioned go-to scoring option with 17.5 ppg, having knocked down 13-of-28 from 3-point range. Johnson (12.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg) is an outstanding defender with 15 blocks and 14 steals. Antonious Cleveland rounds out the double-digit scorers with 10.0 ppg.
The Tigers did what was expected of them against a Division II opponent in the seventh-place game of the Maui Invitational, as they outshot Chaminade from the field, 48 percent to 33.9 percent, and won the rebounding by a convincing 41-27 margin en route to the 14-point victory. Namon Wright came off the bench to score a team-high 21 points on a perfect 7-of-7 showing from the field, which included four 3-pointers. Montaque Gill-Caeser also shined with 18 points, while Ryan Rosburg and Tramaine Isabell netted nine points apiece.
After losing its three top scorers in the offseason, Missouri has struggled to find an offensive identity early in the 2014-15 season, as it shoots only 41.2 percent from the field and 66.4 percent at the foul line for 63.8 ppg, which is less than it allows on the other end of the court (64.7 ppg). Gill-Caeser is a promising freshman with 13.7 ppg but he shoots only 36.6 percent from the field. No one else averages in double figures, with Wes Clark (9.2 ppg) and Johnathan Williams III (9.2 ppg) coming the closest.
Missouri has underperformed this season, but returning home to play an up-and- down SEMO squad should be a recipe for success.
