Utah State (3-0) at Mississippi State (2-0)
GAME NOTES: A pair of undefeated teams get together on Saturday, as the Utah State Aggies come calling on the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
Utah State has won its first three games by taking out Weber State (72-61), Illinois State (60-55) and Santa Clara (60-54), with only the game against the Redbirds taking place on the road. The Aggies will stay out on the road to tangle with UC Davis next before returning home to entertain intrastate rival BYU on Dec. 2. USU opens its Mountain West Conference slate at home versus San Jose State on Dec. 31.
Mississippi State is sporting a 2-0 mark on the young season after disposing of Western Carolina (66-56) and Mississippi Valley State (89-68), both at home. The Bulldogs, who will wrap up their season-opening four-game homestand on Monday against Clayton State, tip off their SEC docket on Jan. 7, 2015 against visiting Tennessee.
The series between these two teams in knotted at 1-1, with last season's tussle in Logan going to the Aggies in an 87-68 final.
In a game that featured some pretty poor shooting, the Aggies battled from behind to knock off Santa Clara earlier this week. Both squads shot in the neighborhood of 35 percent from the field, but the Broncos were real cold in the second half when they hit only 29.6 percent. Jalen Moore paced Utah State with 15 points, thanks in large part to his 8-of-12 effort at the free-throw line. Chris Smith finished with 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds, and JoJo McGlaston rounded out the unit's double-digit scorers with 10 points. The Aggies were beaten on the boards, 43-30, but they turned the ball over only seven times while logging a 21-8 edge in points from the charity stripe.
David Collette is USU's top scorer on the season, netting 16.0 ppg as he is hitting 60 percent of his total shots. Moore is next with 14.3 ppg, and he spearheads the team's rebounding effort with 7.7 rpg. Thus far, foes are shooting just 35.7 percent from the floor, which includes a 24.6 percent showing from beyond the arc, all of which results in only 56.7 ppg.
MSU put five players in double figures, as it easily got past Mississippi Valley State this past Monday. Roquez Johnson led the way with 20 points, hitting nearly every one of his 10 field goal attempts (9-of-10), which certainly helped the team as a whole wind up at 59.6 percent from the floor, despite going just 4-of-15 from 3-point range. Gavin Ware was nearly perfect as well, converting 9-of-11 field goal tries in tallying 19 points, Fred Thomas added 17, Trivante Bloodman 11 and Travis Daniels 10 for a Mississippi State squad that also dominated the glass (47-25), and nearly doubled up its opponent in points from the foul line (23-12).
Johnson also led the Bulldogs in their season-opening win over Western Carolina, as he netted 16 points in going 5-of-7 from the floor, while Thomas tallied 15 points and six boards, and Ware turned in a double-double consisting of 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Despite both teams being unbeaten through the first week, the jury is still out on just how good either of them really is. This will be a good test for both, and one the home team should come out favorably in as Johnson continues to set a new standard in terms of offensive efficiency.
