Boston College (7-6) at Miami-Florida (10-4)
GAME NOTES: Having been inactive since a double-overtime loss against third- ranked Virginia a week ago, the Miami Hurricanes will get back to work as they entertain the Boston College Eagles in Atlantic Coast Conference play at BankUnited Center.
Miami has lost three of its last four games, which includes last Saturday's heartbreaking 89-80 double-overtime defeat at the hands of Virginia, one of the best teams in the nation. The Hurricanes find themselves 10-4 entering Saturday, looking for their first win in ACC action.
Boston College has dropped two games in a row and three of its last four altogether. The Eagles are coming off an overtime game of their own, in which they lost a tight 61-60 decision to Pittsburgh Tuesday evening in overtime. The Eagles are 0-2 in conference so far.
Boston College owns a 24-19 all-time series advantage over Miami, but the Eagles have been as cold as can be in the last 10 meetings. BC has dropped eight straight to Miami, which includes a 69-42 loss in the last meeting last February.
Twice against Pittsburgh, Boston College held a lead going into the final seconds of play. And twice the Eagles allowed Josh Newkirk to hit late-game shots that proved to be the game-tying basket to end regulation, and the game- winning one in overtime. Boston College shot 40.4 percent from the field in the loss, and was led in scoring by Olivier Hanlan, who netted 18 points with eight rebounds and six assists. Aaron Brown chipped in with 11 points of his own in the losing effort.
Hanlan is back to his 2013-14 self, right up at the top of the Boston College scoring leaderboard. The junior guard is netting 16.2 ppg to top the squad, and has dished out 56 assists as well. Brown is the only other BC player to average a scoring figure in double digits, as he enters Saturday netting 15.3 ppg. The Eagles come in scoring 66.7 ppg on 44 percent shooting from the floor, but have allowed opponents to net 64.1 ppg in the same frame. Dennis Clifford leads Boston College in rebounding at 5.9 boards per outing, adding in a team-best 18 blocked shots.
Virginia held a commanding lead over Miami, 38-20, at halftime of last Saturday's ACC clash. But the Hurricanes came storming back in the second half behind 50 percent shooting from the floor to knot the score at 63-63 at the end of regulation. Both teams scored eight in the first overtime period, but the Cavaliers exploded for 18 points in the second extra session to down Miami in Coral Gables. Angel Rodriguez netted 25 points to lead the 'Canes, making 10- of-12 from the free-throw line. Sheldon McClellan chipped in with 16 points, Omar Sherman added 13, Deandre Burnett contributed 12, and Tonye Jekiri narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and 12 rebounds in the loss.
It's been McClellan and Rodriguez who have taken over the 'Canes offensively this season. McClellan tops the squad at 15.7 ppg, though Rodriguez isn't far behind at 14.4 ppg. Rodriguez has served as a viable point guard for Miami, having dished out 61 assists already with a team- best 31 steals. Jekiri has been a force underneath the basket, bringing in 9.5 rpg to lead the team and pull into a second-place tie in the ACC with Louisville big man Montrezl Harrell. The 'Canes as a unit are scoring 70.5 ppg this season on 44.7 percent shooting, but have allowed a minimal 61.8 ppg to their opponents. Boston College will have to be on point offensively in this road contest.
Hanlan will once again have to take over for the Eagles, who will need other strong efforts from role players if they want a chance to upset the Hurricanes in Florida. Rodriguez and McClellan likely have other ideas, though.
