Recap: Memphis vs. Oral Roberts
Memphis, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Austin Nichols came close to a triple-double with 15 points, nine rebounds and eight blocked shots as the Memphis Tigers knocked off the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles, 78-63, in non-conference action at FedEx Forum.
In their third straight win, the Tigers (6-4) got a good effort out of Pookie Powell (14 points, seven assists, six rebounds), Trahson Burrell (12 points, seven rebounds) and Avery Woodson (10 points).
Korey Billbury led Oral Roberts (4-6) with 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Obi Emegano and Albert Owens each netted 10 points in the defeat.
Memphis held a 35-28 lead heading into halftime. The Tigers played solid defense in the opening period, as they held Oral Roberts to a 34.5 shooting percentage from the field in the first 20 minutes. Memphis also out-rebounded the Golden Eagles, 25-14, in the first half.
The Tigers got to the free-throw line often in the second half and converted 15-of-17 foul shots. Memphis also continued to play solid defense in the final 20 minutes, as the Golden Eagles were held to a 33.3 shooting percentage in the closing period.
Memphis won the rebounding battle over Oral Roberts, 48-34. The Tigers' reserves also outscored the Golden Eagles' reserves, 27-13.
