MEMPHIS TIGERS

Memphis Tigers

Memphis Tigers VS. Central Florida Knights

UCF (9-7) at Memphis (10-6)

GAME NOTES: Coming off a triple-overtime thriller, the UCF Knights will try to string a pair of wins together as they travel to face the Memphis Tigers in an American Athletic Conference affair at the FedEx Forum.

UCF has won two of its last three games, and owns a 9-7 overall record with a 2-3 mark in conference play. The team is coming off a 103-100 3OT contest against Tulane on Wednesday, which could provide some momentum moving forward.

Memphis however, has won two games in a row and seven of its last nine altogether. The Tigers are 10-6 this season and 8-3 at home. Memphis picked up a convincing 63-50 win over tough AAC opponent Cincinnati on Thursday.

The all-time series for Memphis against UCF has been a bit lopsided through 16 contests played. The Tigers lead the Knights in the series, 15-1, with an 11-0 mark at home against UCF. The sides met twice last season, with Memphis winning both meetings.

UCF and Tulane were locked in an evenly-matched battle Wednesday night in Orlando. The two sides were knotted at 38-38 at the end of the first half, and then 73-73 at the end of regulation. But it was the Knights who took enough of a lead in the third overtime period to maintain a home victory. Freshman B.J. Taylor led the way for the Knights with 33 points in the game, which lasted for nearly an additional half of play. Brandon Goodwin chipped in with 18 points, Kasey Wilson and Staphon Blair each added 15 points (Blair grabbed 13 rebounds for the double-double), and Adonys Henriquez netted 11 points to round out the team's double-digit scorers.

The 33 points for Taylor did wonders for his team-leading scoring average this season. The freshman guard now heads into Saturday's clash netting 14.8 ppg on 42.4 percent shooting. Henriquez follows that total up with 11.9 ppg, and Goodwin chips in 10.4 ppg for the Knights, who as a unit are scoring 69.7 ppg. The problem for UCF this season, which was not helped by the 100 points Tulane scored, is the team's scoring defense. UCF allows opponents to net 71.8 ppg on 44.6 percent shooting, which is last in the American Athletic Conference.

Memphis gained an eight-point lead at halftime over Cincinnati, and the oft-stagnant Bearcats weren't able to recover in the second period as the Tigers cruised to the 13-point home victory. Austin Nichols was at the forefront of the action yet against for the Tigers, leading the scoring charge with 17 points on the night. The big man added eight rebounds and three blocked shots as well. Avery Woodson chipped in with 14 points, and Kedren Johnson came off the bench to net 13 points with five assists in the win.

The Tigers head into Saturday's contest with Nichols as the sole player on the roster averaging a scoring total in double figures. Nichols owns a 13.3 ppg mark, and also leads Memphis in rebounding (6.1 rpg) and blocked shots (56). Both Shaq Goodwin (5.9 rpg) and Trahson Burrell (5.7 rpg) are nipping at Nichols's heels when it comes to leading the Tigers in the glass. Memphis is scoring 67.2 ppg this season, and has used a strong defensive effort to reach 10 wins already. The team's scoring defense is allowing only 60.2 ppg to opponents, who are shooting 37.8 percent from the floor.

UCF may be riding a high after the triple-overtime win, but perhaps the team is physically drained. Even if the Knights are rested and ready to go, Memphis possesses a scoring defense that could shut the UCF offense down. As long as Nichols is ready to go, Memphis always has an upper hand in the paint.

Predicted Outcome

Memphis 68, UCF 60
