Bradley (3-4) at Memphis (2-3)
GAME NOTES: The Memphis Tigers will try to shake off yet another loss, as they host the Bradley Braves in a non-conference clash on Saturday night.
Memphis' young squad suffered a surprising setback at FedExForum on Tuesday, falling to Stephen F Austin, 64-52, after shooting a scant 1-of-13 from the perimeter. Memphis also turned the ball over 16 times and missed seven of its 16 free throws.
Austin Nichols led all scorers with 16 points, while Shaq Goodwin donated 15 points and six rebounds in the losing cause.
The loss was the beginning of a nine-game homestand for the Tigers, who only have two players -- Nichols and Goodwin -- averaging more than 10 points a game. Goodwin leads the team in both scoring (11.2 ppg) and rebounding (6.0 rpg), while Nichols chips in with 10.4 ppg.
Trahson Burrell is a solid third option at 9.4 ppg, but the Tigers lack depth, leading to the team's sub par scoring average of 60.8 ppg.
Bradley, which will be playing in its first true road game of the campaign, found the offense it has been looking for over the first month of the season on Tuesday as the Braves earned an 84-73 victory against Central Michigan.
The Braves, after averaging a mere 55.4 points in the previous four games, shot a healthy 52.2 percent from the field and got to the free-throw line 38 times. Warren Jones was the catalyst as he erupted for 33 points on 8-of-14 shooting. The junior guard made five 3-pointers and connected on 12-of-15 at the charity stripe.
A 41-20 edge in rebounds, coupled with a 13-point showing from Omari Grier and an 11-point effort from Auston Barnes, helped the Braves cruise to a much- needed win after they dropped their previous two.
Jones' latest performance upped his season average to 15.7 ppg, while Grier and Barnes are contributing 11.1 and 11.8 ppg, respectively.
Memphis has won four straight meetings, but the teams have not met since the third round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament. This is a different Tigers bunch than the one we've grown accustomed to seeing over the last decade or so, and Bradley, even with junior point guard Tramique Sutherland (finger), still sidelined, may be able to pull off a minor upset.
