VMI (2-3) at Maryland (6-0)
GAME NOTES: The Maryland Terrapins will continue their season-long six-game homestand at the Xfinity Center on Sunday afternoon, as they face off against the VMI Keydets in non-conference action.
VMI's tough two-game road trip began in West Virginia on Wednesday, where they came out on the wrong end of a 103-72 decision. It was the Keydets' third loss in their last four games as they slipped to 2-3 on the season. They will play seven of their next nine games on the road.
Maryland, meanwhile, has gotten off to a flying start this season with wins in all six of its games, most notable over Arizona State (78-73) and nationally- ranked Iowa State (72-63) in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic last week. The Terps had a tough time with Monmouth at home on Friday but stayed perfect on the campaign with a 61-56 win.
The Terps lead the all-time series with the Keydets, 42-10, which includes wins in seven straight meetings.
The Keydets actually held a brief first-half lead over WVU in their most recent contest but quickly lost control, falling behind by 18 at the half and as many as 35 down the stretch in the blowout loss. Although they shot a respectable 44.8 percent from the field, including 11-of-31 from 3-point range, they were done in by an eye-popping 36 turnovers, their most in a game since 2006. Q.J. Peterson tallied 13 points, five rebounds and five assists but was also responsible for 11 of the giveaways. Craig Hinton came off the bench to net 10 and three others scored eight points.
Generating offense has not been a problem for VMI this season, as it shoots just shy of 47 percent from the field for 88.2 ppg, but it has had difficult stopping teams on the other end of the floor, allowing 82.4 ppg on 49.1 percent shooting. Peterson is the go-to option with 20.6 ppg and he has drained 14-of-22 from 3-point range. Hinton puts up 11.7 ppg and Brian Brown, Tim Marshall and Jordan Weethee all net between 9.8 and 9.4 ppg.
The Terps led by as many as 16 in their game against Monmouth but saw that advantage dwindle to just one in the final minute. However, they responded by shooting 6-of-6 at the foul line over the final 34 seconds to put a stamp on the victory. They were outstanding from the charity stripe all night long (21- of-26), which helped make up for a lackluster field goal shooting performance (.378). Melo Trimble was the catalyst in the triumph, shooting 3-of-5 from 3- point range and knocking down all but one of his 14 free-throw tries on his way to a game-high 24 points. Jake Layman was also solid with 14 points.
It's no surprise Maryland is off to such a great start this season when looking at its numbers, as it not only shoot 47.6 percent from the field for 75.3 ppg but it yields a mere 57.8 ppg on the other end on a lowly 34.2 percent shooting. Trimble and Dez Wells are tied for the team lead in scoring with 16.2 ppg apiece, but Trimble will need to shoulder the load for the next month or so with Wells sidelined with a broken wrist he suffered in the win over Iowa State. Layman (13.8 ppg, 5.2 rpg) will also be turned to for increased production.
Even without arguably its best player for the next four weeks, Maryland is still the more talented team in this matchup and will give its home fans plenty to cheer about.
