Arizona State (3-0) vs. Maryland (3-0)
GAME NOTES: The Arizona State Sun Devils and the Maryland Terrapins will each attempt to keep their perfect records in tact when they meet at the Sprint Center to take part in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic.
Three games in and Arizona State has yet to taste defeat. The Sun Devils routed Loyola Marymount, 68-44, last time out after tackling Chicago State (86-50) and Bethune-Cookman (49-39) in the first two games.
Maryland is off to a 3-0 record as well. The Terps notched a 66-50 victory over Fordham last time out. That win came on the heels of convincing victories over Wagner (82-48) and Central Connecticut State (93-57).
These teams have split two previous matchups, with Maryland winning in 1953 (65-60), and Arizona State in 1994 (97-90). The victor here will battle the winner of the Alabama/Iowa State matchup in Tuesday's championship game. The loser of each contest will meet as well.
Arizona State played very well at the defensive end against LMU, holding the visiting Lions to just 28.1 percent shooting, including a 1-of-11 effort from 3-point range. The Sun Devils also claimed a 43-32 advantage in rebounds, which made up for their own struggles with ball security (17 turnovers). Chance Murray scored 12 points off the bench to lead the scoring output.
The Sun Devils' defensive efforts have been strong this season. Although it has only been three games, all against inferior competition, they are allowing only 44.3 points per game on 30.5 percent shooting. With opponents failing to score much, Arizona State hasn't had to be an offensive force. Shaquielle McKissic (10.3 ppg) is the only player on the team averaging in double figures, but seven other players are netting at least five points per game. Jonathan Gilling (9.7 ppg) and Eric Jacobsen (9.3 ppg, 9 rpg, 3 bpg) are the next-best scorers after McKissic, while Jacobsen's work on the glass and defensive prowess have made for a nice transition from former standout Jordan Bachynski.
Maryland survived a cold shooting night against Fordham to earn a 16-point victory. The Terrapins made good on only 36.4 percent of their shots in the first half, and 44.7 percent for the game as a whole. However, they also limited the Rams to just 30.6 percent shooting, while logging scoring advantages off turnovers (18-10) and in the paint (24-16). Jared Nickens only knocked down 4-of-12 attempts from the field to finish with a team-high 13 points.
Jake Layman was the only other player to score in double figures for the Terps against Fordham, finishing with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Layman is second on the team in scoring (14 ppg, 5.7 rpg), while leading the way on the glass. Dez Wells is averaging 17 points per game, but he only had eight points against Fordham. Melo Trimble (10.3 ppg) is the third member of the team averaging in double figures, but he is only making 34.8 percent from the field.
Another slow night from Wells could be disastrous for Maryland. However, it is unlikely he will only take six shots again. Assuming he is able to make the most of an increased workload, he should lead the Terrapins to another victory.
