Recap: Marquette vs. Georgetown
Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Joshua Smith registered a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds as the Georgetown Hoyas outlasted the Marquette Golden Eagles for a 95-85 overtime win in a Big East Conference thriller at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera paced the Hoyas (14-5, 6-2 Big East) with 19 points and five assists. Isaac Copeland provided a spark off the bench with 17 points, Mikael Hopkins netted 13 points and Aaron Bowen chipped in 11 points. The victory was the fourth in a row for Georgetown.
Marquette (10-9, 2-5) suffered its third-straight setback despite receiving 26 points apiece from Duane Wilson and Matt Carlino, who combined to hit on 11- of-16 tries from behind the 3-point line. Luke Fischer made an impact on the defensive end for the Golden Eagles with five blocked shots.
Georgetown took a 45-39 lead into the intermission after it knocked down 5- of-12 attempts from beyond the arc in the opening stanza. The Golden Eagles trailed despite hitting on 62.5 percent of their field goal tries before the break.
Marquette converted 7-of-11 shots from behind the 3-point line and 9-of-12 tries at the free-throw line in the second period. Smith broke a 79-79 tie with five seconds remaining in regulation by sinking a pair of free-throw attempts. The Golden Eagles answered as Carlino drained a jumper to even the score at 81 and force an extra session.
Georgetown closed out the game on a 9-0 run. The Hoyas outscored Marquette, 11-1, at the charity stripe in overtime.
The Hoyas enjoyed a 36-28 advantage in total rebounds and outscored the hosts, 28-14, at the free-throw line.
