Creighton (9-8) at Marquette (9-6)
GAME NOTES: Coming off a heartbreaking defeat against a nationally-ranked opponent, the Creighton Bluejays turn their attention to the Marquette Golden Eagles for a Big East Conference tilt Wednesday night inside the Bradley Center.
Creighton remains in search of its first conference victory of the season and has dropped five games in a row overall. The Bluejays hung tough with 19th- ranked Seton Hall over the weekend, only to end up losing, 68-67, on a 3- pointer with two seconds on the clock. Beginning with this matchup, they will play three of their next four on the road.
Marquette has lost two of its last three outings, which followed a four-game win streak. The Golden Eagles have been idle since a 65-59 setback at Georgetown last Tuesday. This marks their only home game of a four-game stretch that began against the Hoyas.
Marquette leads the all-time series, 48-30, although Creighton swept both meetings in 2013-14 and was an 85-70 winner when these teams met up last February in Milwaukee. Last season was the first time they faced each other in 15 years.
The Bluejays came up just short against Seton Hall despite shooting an impressive 51.1 percent from the floor for the game. They also played the second half without the services of leading scorers Austin Chatman (13.1 ppg) and Isaiah Zierden (11.1 ppg) due to injury. Still, the game featured eight ties and 13 lead changes, although Pirates guard Sterling Gibbs accounted for the final lead change by hitting a 3-point dagger with 2.2 seconds remaining. Creighton's James Milliken had a chance to win it at the other end but his 3- point attempt bounced off the rim.
Milliken finished with a team-high 20 points in the loss. Will Artino recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Rick Kreklow also reached double figures with 10 points off the bench. But the Bluejays sorely missed Chatman and Zierden, as that duo combined for only two points in 19 minutes of floor time. Chatman is the only returning starter from last season's squad that reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season.
Golden Eagles first-year head coach Steve Wojciechowski has used only eight players this season. One of those players, Indiana transfer Luke Fischer has only been eligible for seven games since the start of the new semester. But in that time, Fischer has shot a ridiculous 82 percent from the field (40-of-49) while averaging a team-best 13.1 points and 2.4 blocks to go along with 5.4 rebounds per tilt. BYU transfer Matt Carlino is next in line with 12.3 ppg and leads the team with 54 assists and 31 threes (.383). Juan Anderson (11.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg) and Duane Wilson (10.9 ppg) round out team's double-digit scorers.
In their latest contest at Georgetown, the Golden Eagles were somehow unable to capitalize on a 12-minute second-half stretch that saw the Hoyas go without a field goal. The Hoyas instead relied on the free-throw line, where they held a 23-8 scoring advantage for the game. Carlino led Marquette with 16 points in the loss, while Fischer scored 13.
The Golden Eagles have the homecourt advantage here, but that certainly did not matter the last time these teams met. The Bluejays will no doubt be hungry to atone for Saturday's near upset bid, but will Chatman and Zierden be healthy enough to suit up?
