Recap: LSU vs. Southern Miss
Baton Rouge, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jarell Martin scored 24 points and pulled down nine rebounds as the LSU Tigers knocked out the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss, 87-67, in a non-conference clash at the Maravich Center.
Tim Quarterman came off the bench and registered a double-double for the Tigers (10-2) with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, not to mention six assists and a pair of steals. Also recording a double-double for the host was Jordan Mickey with 14 points and 10 boards, adding a game-high six blocked shots, while Keith Hornsby and Jalyn Patterson both tallied 10 points as LSU's winning streak stretched to seven in a row.
The Southern Eagles (5-6), were paced by Chip Armelin with a game-high 28 points, to go with six rebounds, followed by Matt Bingaya and Davon Hayes with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Southern Miss managed to move out to a seven-point advantage in the first four minutes of the encounter, eventually shooting an impressive 6-of-13 behind the 3-point line through the first 20 minutes of action. However, LSU countered with 47.4 percent accuracy from the field overall and a 10-1 scoring advantage at the free-throw line in order to claim a 49-33 edge at the break.
The Tigers boosted their aim from the floor in the second half to 51.5 percent and never looked back as they continued their strong play with the SEC schedule set to begin the second week of January versus Missouri.
USM, which was guilty of 15 turnovers, was beaten on the glass (46-28) and outscored in the paint (54-26) in the contest.
