College of Charleston (5-6) at LSU (8-2)
GAME NOTES: The LSU Tigers bring a five-game winning streak into Monday's non- conference tilt with the College of Charleston Cougars.
The Tigers rallied from an 11-point deficit against UAB last Thursday to pull out a 79-70 road victory. Jarell Martin scored a game-high 25 points, Keith Hornsby checked in with 24, and Jordan Mickey donated 13 to go with eight rebounds and seven blocks in the win.
After trailing 39-33 at halftime thanks to a 35.5 percent shooting effort, LSU found its stroke after the break and connected on 56.7 percent from the field. The Tigers made half of the 14 3-point attempts and outscored UAB at the free- throw line by a 16-3 margin.
Mickey in nearly averaging a double-double with 16.8 points and 9.9 rebounds per outing, while Martin is almost there with a 15.9 points and 9.0 caroms per contest. Hornsby (13.8 ppg), Tim Quarterman (11.2 ppg) and Josh Gray (11.1 ppg) are the other scoring threats, with no one else on the roster producing more than 3.1 ppg. Gray is listed as questionable for Monday's game with an ankle injury.
The Cougars have dropped two straight on the heels of a three-game win streak and sit at 5-6 on the season. They dropped an 80-68 decision to Davidson on Saturday despite getting 20 points from Canyon Berry.
Joe Chealey contributed 19 points and was a rebound shy of a double-double, while Adjehi Baru contributed with 12 points and six boards in the setback.
Davidson shot an impressive 56.3 percent from the field in the first half and took a 41-33 lead into the locker room, despite the Cougars scoring the last 10 points. Charleston never recovered in the second half as its bench was limited to six points.
Chealey (12.5 ppg) and Barry (12.1 ppg) lead the Cougars in scoring, while Anthony Stitt and Baru hover right around 9.0 ppg. Baru also leads the team on the glass at 6.7 rpg, although the team is averaging just 62.5 ppg.
This is the first meeting between these two schools, and Charleston is catching LSU at a bad time. The Tigers are rolling right now, and with the home fans ready to back them, they should cruise to an easy win.
