Oral Roberts (19-14) at Loyola Chicago (20-13)
GAME NOTES: The Loyola Chicago Ramblers host the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in the quarterfinals of the CBI on Monday night.
The Ramblers are coming off a 62-59 comeback win over Rider last Tuesday, while Oral Roberts won a shootout against UC Santa Barbara a day later.
These teams were former conference rivals from 1979-1987, but have played just twice since 1989. Loyola leads the all-time series, 14-0.
Loyola trailed Rider by nine early in the second half of their first-round meeting before Milton Doyle spearheaded the comeback. Doyle scored 20 of his game-high 22 points after the break, and the Ramblers held Rider to 2-of-14 shooting to end the game.
Devon Turk scored 14 points for the Ramblers, who reached the 20-win mark for the first time since 2006-07.
The Ramblers have proved to be deliberate in their offensive attack this season. Loyola doesn't put up flashy numbers at a modest 62.0 ppg, but the team does it with great efficiency, shooting a hefty 47 percent from the floor, including 39.1 percent beyond the arc.
Christian Thomas is a big reason for Loyola's strong season in terms of efficient play, as the 6-foot-5 senior is shooting an impressive 55.7 percent from the floor entering this event, and is second on the team in scoring at 11.2 ppg. Doyle took over the scoring lead at 11.5 ppg, followed by junior forward Montel James and his 9.2 ppg. Rebounding has been challenge for Loyola this season, averaging just 28.8 caroms per contest, which ranks near the bottom of all Division I programs.
ORU has been much more prolific at the offensive end this season, and the Eagles showed that last Wednesday when they outgunned the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, 91-87, in the first round. Obi Emegano scored 30 points and dished out four assists, Bobby Word added 16 points, Aaron Young and Brandon Conley each scored 14 points in the win.
The Eagles took the lead and maintained it in the second half by shooting an impressive 60.7 percent from the field, which included 8-of-13 from 3-point distance. They also outscored the Gauchos at the free-throw line, 20-11.
Emegano has had a sensational season and finished the regular season as one of the Summit League's top scorers. He enters this clash netting 18.5 ppg on 45.4 percent shooting from the floor. He is the only active Eagle to average double digits in scoring after Korey Billbury was suspended earlier in the season. The Golden Eagles are netting 67.0 ppg on 43.0 percent shooting, but have struggled at times defensively by allowing opponents to 68.4 ppg on 44.4 percent shooting.
This is Loyola's first postseason tournament since making a run to the NCAA Sweet 16 back in 1985, while ORU won two games in the CIT two years ago. The Ramblers have been vulnerable at home, and ORU has enough firepower to escape with a win.
