Boise State (1-0) at Loyola Marymount (1-0)
GAME NOTES: Two teams that opened the 2014-15 campaign with victories on Friday head right back to the hardwood on Saturday, as the Loyola Marymount Lions host the Boise State Broncos as part of the LMU Classic at Gersten Pavilion.
The Broncos, who started off the 2013-14 campaign with eight straight wins before bowing to the likes of Kentucky and Saint Mary's in back-to-back contests, put their best foot forward on Friday as they slipped by San Diego by a score of 81-75, one of the six Mountain West Conference programs that began the season with a win on Friday.
As for host Loyola Marymount, which represents the West Coast Conference and also started last season off well enough with four consecutive triumphs, it took care of business against Southeast Missouri State with a 76-66 triumph. The victory was key seeing as how all but one of the WCC teams in action on Friday also landed in the win column.
The Broncos lead the all-time series with LMU by a count of 3-2, with the most recent victory coming in the 2009-10 season opener by a score of 90-87 during the Grizzly Classic in Montana.
Boise State fell behind right out of the gate against San Diego, trailing by as many as seven points through the first 10 minutes of action, yet BSU found itself with a two-point edge at the break, 35-33, and used 50 percent shooting from the field in the second half in order to capture the win.
Anthony Drmic scored 21 points, hitting 3-of-8 shots behind the 3-point line, as he paced five players in double figures for the Broncos. He also collected a team-best nine rebounds, all at the defensive end, allowing BSU to claim a slight 36-35 edge on the glass overall.
Fellow starters David Wacker and Mikey Thompson both posted 12 points, while reserves Rob Heyer and Montigo Alford stepped up with 10 points apiece as they both played at least 24 minutes. A bit of a concern was Nick Duncan, a starting forward who took just a single shot and was scoreless over the course of 16 minutes for a Boise State group that held San Diego to only 5-of-19 shooting out on the perimeter.
Evan Payne scored a game-high 23 points off the bench as Loyola Marymount defeated the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri State by double figures on Friday.
Ayodeji Egbeyemi and Matt Hayes both added 13 points to the LMU attack, followed by Marin Mornar with 10 points. In a game that featured 12 ties and eight lead changes, LMU survived 14 turnovers, compared to just three miscues for the visitors. The Lions made up for their mistakes by performing well on the glass with a 41-28 rebounding advantage. David Humphries, who shot only 3- of-9 from the field and missed all three of his 3-point attempts, was the leader on the boards as he cleared a game-high eight rebounds.
Defensively, the Lions limited SEMO to just 4-of-20 shooting on the outside and watched the visitors convert only 6-of-12 at the free-throw line.
Both teams are having to deal with a quick turn-around, although the Broncos are slightly more rested and have shown that they are more than just Drmic when it comes to putting points on the board.
