Recap: Long Beach State vs. Xavier
Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Caffey knocked down 24 points, helping the Long Beach State 49ers edge out the Xavier Musketeers, 73-70, in the final round of the Wooden Legacy Tournament at the Honda Center.
Caffey shot 8-of-18 from the field, including 5-of-8 from the perimeter for the 49ers (4-4), who have won two of their last three. Tyler Lamb (16 points), Temidayo Yussuf (15) and Branford Jones (13) also reached double figures.
Matt Stainbrook notched a double-double on 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Musketeers (5-2), who have lost back-to-back games. James Farr grabbed 11 rebounds and Myles Davis tallied 10 points.
Early on the 49ers struggled, shooting just 32.3 percent from the field in the first half. The Musketeers were a little better at 39.4 percent, and they led 28-25 going into halftime.
In the second half the 49ers put the pressure on, shooting an improved 51.6 percent from the floor. The Musketeers tried to keep pace, at 41.7 percent, but quickly surrendered their first-half lead. With 3:58 remaining, a Stainbrook layup put them back up by one point. A 3-pointer by Jones, less than 20 seconds later, put the 49ers on top for good.
Perimeter shooting bolstered the Long Beach State offense, as the 49ers hit 10-of-22 from beyond the arc while the opposition made just 2-of-16.
