LONG BEACH ST. 49ERS

Long Beach St. 49ers

Long Beach St. 49ers VS. Xavier Musketeers

Xavier (5-1) vs. Long Beach State (3-4)

GAME NOTES: The Xavier Musketeers will attempt to avenge their first loss of the season as they take on the Long Beach State 49ers in the final round of the Wooden Legacy tournament at the Honda Center Sunday.

Xavier was 5-0 on the season and was plowing through the Wooden Legacy field before the Musketeers ran into Texas-El Paso on Friday. The Miners hung on to hand Xavier its first loss of the season, 77-73.

Long Beach State took down Western Michigan, 73-55, in the first round of the Wooden Legacy tournament earlier in the week, but the 49ers dropped their most recent contest against Washington, 80-70. LBSU has lost three of its last five games entering this matchup.

Long Beach State and Xavier have met just twice on the court before, and one of those times was earlier this season. The Musketeers easily took down the 49ers, 97-74, in Cincinnati.

Xavier held a five-point lead over UTEP at the half in the Musketeers' last outing, but the team couldn't sustain that advantage through the rest of the game as the Miners hit 15-of-22 shots from the free-throw line in the second half to win it. Myles Davis came off the bench to score a team-best 15 points for Xavier, while freshman Trevon Bluiett added another 13 points. Dee Davis had 12 points with five assists, and center Matt Stainbrook chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds. The Musketeers shot a healthy 45.9 percent from the floor in the loss.

Bluiett has been sensational through the team's first six games, as the freshman forward leads the team in scoring with a 17.2 ppg average. Stainbrook chips in with 15.5 ppg, and owns a team-high 7.5 rpg mark, which is closely followed by James Farr's 7.2 rpg average. The Musketeers this season are averaging a whopping 85.8 ppg as a unit, and are giving up just 67.8 ppg to opponents. Davis, through five games played, averages 10.0 ppg to that total as well.

Washington seemingly ran right through Long Beach State in Friday's 10-point win. The Huskies were allowed to shoot 47.5 percent from the floor, while LBSU connected on 41.8 percent of its attempts in the loss. Mike Caffey led all 49ers with 18 points in the game while also dishing out six assists. Temidayo Yussuf and Deontae North each contributed 16 points for Long Beach State, which turned the ball over 13 times in the defeat.

Caffey has been the brightest spot on a team averaging 73.3 ppg this season. Caffey leads the team with an 18.1 ppg average, also checking in with a team- best 4.3 apg mark. Tyler Lamb and David Samuels are both on the cusp of double-digit scoring, netting 9.8 ppg and 9.4 ppg, respectively. Long Beach State is allowing opponents to score 75.4 ppg this season, and the 97 points allowed to Xavier the first time around was a season high against the 49ers so far.

Long Beach State still has some coming together to do, especially on the offensive side of the ball. But Xavier's loss to UTEP likely only made the Musketeers angry, and even though the game was in Cincinnati the last time around, the 49ers have to play their absolute best in order to win.
