Purdue (3-0) vs. Kansas State (2-1)
GAME NOTES: The Purdue Boilermakers put their undefeated record on the line on Monday afternoon, as they take on the Kansas State Wildcats in first-round action of the Maui Invitational.
The winner of this game will take on either Arizona or Missouri in second- round action on Tuesday.
Matt Painter's Boilermakers haven't exactly played top-notch competition to begin the 2014-15 season, but they have taken care of their business in impressive fashion, with routs of Samford (80-40), IUPUI (77-57) and most recently, Grambling (82-30).
Bruce Weber's Wildcats opened the year by knocking off Southern Utah (98-68) and UMKX (83-73) at home in Bramlage Coliseum, but then dropped their first road game of the season, a 69-60 setback at Long Beach State last Friday.
This marks the ninth all-time meeting between these two teams, with Kansas State holding a 6-2 series advantage. KSU has won two straight meetings, including an 81-77 decision the last time these two teams met in 1988.
The Boilermakers have dominated the opposition in just about every facet of the game, averaging 79.7 ppg on .513 shooting, while allowing just 42.3 ppg on an ugly .294 efficiency. The team is also enjoying a +9.6 rebounding edge and is forcing an even 20 turnovers per game. Vince Edwards leads a trio of Boilermakers in double-digit scoring with 13.7 ppg. Kendall Stephens is a close second at 13.3 ppg, while Isaac Haas comes off the bench with his 11.3 ppg.
In the 52-point romp over Grambling last week, Purdue was just under 50 percent shooting (31-of-63), but held Grambling to just 11 total field goals in the lopsided affair. In addition, Purdue held a 41-27 edge in rebounding and forced a ridiculous 27 turnovers in the game. Haas was the only Boilermaker to notch double digits in the win with 17 points, but 12 players in all scored in the win for Purdue.
Poor shooting did in the Wildcats in their game at Long Beach State, as they shot a season-low .328 from the floor in the nine-point setback. Thomas Gipson led the team with 13 points, followed by Nino Williams and Wesley Iwundu, who tallied 12 and nine points, respectively.
Gipson, a 6-foot-7 senior, has been terrific in the early going, averaging a steady 17.0 ppg and doing so on an ultra-efficient .684 shooting. He is also tops on the team in rebounding at 6.7 rpg. Marcus Foster adds 11.3 ppg, followed by Nigel Johnson's 10.7 ppg. Williams saw his first action of the season against the 49ers, but is a veteran who is expected to be a valuable contributor going forward.
Both teams are stepping up in competition in this one, but the way Purdue is playing at both ends of the floor certainly tips the scales in the Boilermakers' direction.
