Recap: IUPUI vs. Ball State
Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - P.J. Boutte made a floater as time expired in overtime to lift IUPUI to a 71-69 win over the Ball State Cardinals in non-conference action inside newly renovated Fairgrounds Gymnasium.
Boutte finished with a team-high 16 points, six assists and three steals. Aaron Brennan added 14 points and Mason Archie scored 13 to help lift the Jaguars (2-2) to .500 for the first time since Nov. 17, 2012.
Sean Sellers led the Cardinals (1-2) with a game-high 22 points, while Matt Kamieniecki recorded a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds in a losing effort. Jeremie Tyler had 12 points and seven rebounds filling in for suspended point guard Zavier Turner, but he also committed a game-high seven turnovers.
The Cardinals led by as many as five midway through the first half, but they trailed, 32-31, at the break after shooting just 1-of-9 from beyond the arc in the opening frame.
Ball State held a key 12-1 scoring advantage at the foul line in the second half. Boutte had a chance to win it for IUPUI at the end of regulation, but he could not get a jumper to fall in the final seconds.
The score was knotted at 69-69 late in overtime when Tyler turned the ball over with 32 seconds remaining, giving possession back to IUPUI. The Jaguars held for the last shot but almost gave the ball away with four seconds remaining. However, Boutte scooped it up near midcourt and drove to the basket for the game-winner.
IUPUI was out-rebounded, 42-28, but made up for it by forcing 25 turnovers.
