Pepperdine (3-0) at Iowa (2-2)
GAME NOTES: The Pepperdine Waves will put their perfect record on the line as they travel to face the Iowa Hawkeyes in a non-conference matchup at Carver- Hawkeye Arena on Monday.
Pepperdine is 3-0 this season after accumulating wins over Fresno State, Cal Lutheran and, most recently, San Jose State by a 63-44 margin. The Waves will hit the road for just the second time this season as they head to Iowa City.
Iowa started the year off strong, winning both of its first two games. But the Hawkeyes then went to the 2K Classic where they squared off against Texas and Syracuse, and dropped both of those decisions. Iowa lost its most recent contest to the Orange, 66-63.
The Waves and Hawkeyes have met on the court twice in their series history, with Iowa earning both victories. Both times Pepperdine has traveled to Iowa City, most recently in December of 1994.
Pepperdine's spirits are at an all-time high after the team's 3-0 start, but this contest against Iowa will be the most difficult so far. The Waves didn't shoot the ball especially well against San Jose State, netting 40.6 percent of their attempts from the floor. Jett Raines contributed a team-high 21 points for Pepperdine, adding in eight rebounds in 35 minutes of action. Stacy Davis netted 13 points with six boards and five assists, and Jeremy Major contributed 10 points in the victory. Thankfully for Pepperdine, San Jose State had a much worse shooting performance than the Waves, connecting on just 30 percent of their field goal tries.
Davis, who came on strong for the Waves toward the end of last season, is right back up at the top of the Pepperdine leaderboard when it comes to scoring. After three games, Davis is averaging 17.7 ppg with 7.7 rpg. He's second on the team in rebounding behind only Raines, who averages 8.7 boards per outing. Raines is second on the squad with 15.0 ppg, followed closely by Major's 12.7 ppg total. The Waves are scoring 76.0 ppg through three contests, but are more importantly holding the opposition to a mere 59.7 ppg.
Syracuse held a five-point lead over Iowa in the Hawkeyes' last outing as part of the 2K Classic at Madison Square Garden, and the team made a late rally in the second half to try and force either overtime or a come-from-behind Hawkeyes' victory. The team came up short, though, on the legs of 40 percent shooting from the floor. Jarrod Uthoff led the Hawkeyes with 20 points and six rebounds, while Aaron White contributed a double-double of 15 points and 12 boards. Center Adam Woodbury rounded out the double-digit Iowa scorers in the contest with 12 points against the Orange.
Having played four games already, the Hawkeyes are already statistically further along than most teams in the nation. White leads Iowa through those four contests with 16.8 ppg and 8.8 rpg - also a team best. Uthoff isn't too far off the scoring pace, netting 13.3 ppg with 4.8 rpg. Woodbury comes close to touching double-digit figures, but falls just short at 9.8 ppg. As a unit, Iowa is scoring 74.2 ppg, and is giving up just 62.2 ppg to opponents.
Pepperdine has been riding the hot streak and scoring prowess of Davis, Raines and Major. But this contest against Iowa will be the toughest yet, especially considering the Waves haven't won in Iowa City in either of their two attempts.
