Iowa Hawkeyes

Iowa Hawkeyes VS. North Dakota St. Bison

North Dakota State (0-1) at Iowa (1-0)

GAME NOTES: The Iowa Hawkeyes put their 25-game non-conference home winning streak on the line on Monday night, as coach Fran McCaffery's club entertains the Bison of North Dakota State as part of the 2K Classic at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

North Dakota State opened its season at No. 10 Texas on Friday, and fell hard to the Longhorns in an 85-50 final. It was the 10th time that the Bison took on a member of the Top-25, and the team slipped to 3-7 all-time in such affairs. NDSU is expected to be one of the better teams in the Summit League this season, but the schedule-makers didn't do the team any favors by lining up the Longhorns and Hawkeyes right out of the chute.

Iowa is probably a middle-tier team in the Big Ten Conference this season, but the Hawkeyes had little trouble dispatching visiting Hampton in the opener on Friday, doing so in a 90-56 final. The win was coach McCaffery's 75th at the school, and his squad will face significantly tougher tests in the weeks ahead as it will tangle with Texas, either Syracuse or California, North Carolina and Iowa State prior to the start of league play at Ohio State on Dec. 30.

There has only been one other meeting between these two teams, which North Dakota State took in a 21-17 decision in Iowa City way back in 1933.

Poor shooting and a lack of presence on the glass did the Bison in during their season-opening loss at Texas, as they shot just 27.4 percent from the floor, which included a dismal 7-of-29 effort from 3-point range. Conversely, the Longhorns made good on 48.4 percent of their total shots and doubled up NDSU at the foul line, 18-9. UT crashed the boards for 51 rebounds, while the Bison finished with 32.

Lawrence Alexander was high man for North Dakota State with 16 points, while Kory Brown was the only other player to score in double figures with 10. The team doled out only eight assists and was dreadful at the foul line, converting only 9-of-17 opportunities (.529). The 'Horns easily won the battles in points in the paint (34-14), points off turnovers (13-1), and scoring from the reserves (32-14).

Iowa had five players score in double figures, led by Aaron White's 19 points, as it easily beat the Hampton Pirates in Friday's season lid lifter. White added seven rebounds and six assists to his solid stat line, while Jarrod Uthoff tacked on 13 points, Anthony Clemmons and Gabriel Olaseni chipped in a dozen each, and Peter Jok finished with 11 to go with eight boards. Olaseni came up with seven caroms, as Iowa easily won the war on the boards, 48-32, while taking advantage of 17 turnovers.

Collectively, the Hawkeyes shot 47.5 percent from the field, draining 9-of-21 3-point tries along the way, while holding the Pirates to just 33.9 percent success on their field goal attempts, which included a poor 4-of-18 showing from beyond the arc. Iowa scored 23 points at the foul line, far exceeding that of Hampton (12 points).

For the second straight game, expect the Hawkeyes to dominate an opponent from start to finish as they look ahead to much tougher competition.
