Eastern Washington (3-1) at Indiana (4-0)
GAME NOTES: The Indiana Hoosiers will continue their season-opening eight-game homestand on Monday night, as they welcome the Eastern Washington Eagles to Assembly Hall for a non-conference matchup.
EWU opened up its season with a perfect three-game homestand, with each victory coming by at least 24 points. The Eagles put their perfect record on the line in a difficult road matchup with SMU on Saturday but suffered a 77-68 setback.
Indiana has enjoyed its lengthy stay at home to open the season, as it is 4-0 for the third time in the past four seasons. The Hoosiers most recently downed Lamar on Saturday, 85-72, to extend their non-conference home winning streak to 43 games, the third-longest active streak in the nation.
In the only previous meeting in the all-time series back in 2001, Indiana bested EWU, 87-60.
The Eagles held a lead over SMU in the first three minutes of the game, but after SMU ripped off a 7-0 run, they never held an advantage for the rest of the game before suffering the nine-point loss. They shot just 41.7 percent from the field, compared to 49.1 percent for their opponent, and while they knocked down 11 3-pointers, they jacked 36 attempts (.306). Tyler Harvey was especially busy from beyond the arc (4-of-14) on his way to 24 points. Venky Jois tallied a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Parker Kelly pitched in with 12 points.
The high-octane EWU offensive attack drops in 81.0 ppg this season on 53.9 percent from the floor, with a large portion of that damage coming from long distance (11.8 3-pointers made per game at 41.2 percent). It has been strong defensively as well, allowing just 55.8 ppg. Harvey is responsible for nearly five 3-pointers per contest en route to a team-best 19.8 ppg. Jois (16.2 ppg, 7.8 rpg) is shooting greater than 70 percent from the floor, and Kelly (11.0 ppg) is off to an impressive start as well.
While Indiana was never able to pull away from Lamar its last time out - it failed to lead by more than 14 points in the second half - its advantage was also rarely in doubt, as Lamar never got closer than seven points over the final 20 minutes. Although both teams shot greater than 50 percent from the floor, Indiana drained 9-of-20 from 3-point range, outscored Lamar at the free-throw line (16-5) and won the rebounding battle (38-29). Pacing five teammates in double figures with 21 points was James Blackmon Jr., who knocked down 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Yogi Ferrell scored 19, Robert Johnson netted 13 and Hanner Mosquera-Perea and Troy Williams poured in 11 and 10, respectively.
The Hoosiers have established dominance on both ends of the court early in the season, as they score 89.5 ppg while allowing just 67.2 ppg, and they live in the green with their rebounding (+5.3) and turnover (+2.5) margins. Blackmon has been red-hot from 3-point range (16-of-25), which has gone a long way in putting up a team-high 22.8 ppg. Ferrell (16.8 ppg) hands out 5.5 apg, while Johnson (13.8 ppg) and Williams (10.5 ppg) round out the double-digit scorers.
EWU proved to be vulnerable on the road in its most recent contest, and expect that trend to continue as it ventures into one of the most hostile road environments in the country.
