Georgia St. Panthers

Georgia St. Panthers VS. Southern Miss. Golden Eagles

Southern Miss (5-4) at Georgia State (6-3)

GAME NOTES: The Georgia State Panthers close out the home portion of their non-conference schedule on Sunday afternoon, as they host the Southern Miss Golden Eagles at the GSU Sports Arena.

The Panthers recently enjoyed a five-game win streak, after losing back-to- back decisions against nationally-ranked Iowa State and Colorado State in the middle of last month, but that successful run came to an end on Wednesday. Against Old Dominion on the road, GSU went to overtime before falling in a 58-54 final, the point total being the lowest of the season for the Panthers.

As for the Golden Eagles, they've had trouble scoring points all season long, dealing with a low of 36 versus Drexel on the road at the end of last month. The team has been a model of inconsistency, alternating wins and losses over the last eight outings, with the trend holding up with a loss to Jackson State on Thursday by a score of 66-46.

Southern Miss leads the all-time series by a count of 6-3, picking up a 75-65 overtime victory in the most recent meeting last season at home.

The Golden Eagles were simply dismal against Jackson State earlier this week, converting a grand total of just four field goals in the first half and shooting 37.1 percent from the floor for the entire game. The squad ended up with 22 turnovers, close to twice the number of field goals the Tigers allowed them to knock down.

Still, Matt Bingaya managed to produce a double-double for the visitors with 20 points and 10 rebounds, adding three steals as well, while Chip Armelin posted another 10 points as the duo combined to account for all but three of the made baskets for USM.

Bingaya, who has led Southern Miss in scoring six times already, is the only player averaging double figures entering the weekend with his 16.2 ppg. He is also the top rebounder for the program with 6.1 rpg, but still the squad is quite weak on the glass (29.4 rpg) and is being beaten on the boards by almost four rebounds per contest.

The Panthers led by eight points late in the game against Old Dominion, but the visitors were unable to sustain that advantage and eventually lost in overtime to the Monarchs. Playing a total of 44 minutes, Ryan Harrow was tops in scoring for GSU with 16 points, while R.J. Hunter registered a double- double consisting of 13 points and 10 rebounds, although the latter did shoot only 5-of-18 from the floor and 1-of-8 behind the 3-point line.

Hunter and Harrow are one of the top scoring duos in the country as the former pours in 22.1 ppg and the latter accounts for 19.4 ppg,. while the rest of the Georgia State offense produces approximately 33 ppg. Outscoring opponents by 10.3 ppg, the Panthers have a defense that is limiting foes to only 39.4 percent shooting from the field, which includes 31.6 percent behind the 3- point line.

The scoring woes for the Golden Eagles will more than likely be realized yet again on Sunday and while Georgia State is far from an offensive juggernaut, the team should still be in position to claim the home win on the backs of Hunter and Harrow.

Predicted Outcome

Georgia State 74, Southern Miss 60
