Georgetown Hoyas VS. Towson Tigers

Towson (7-1) at Georgetown (4-2)

GAME NOTES: The Towson Tigers will shoot for an eighth straight win on Sunday when they face the Georgetown Hoyas in a non-conference affair at the Verizon Center.

On Nov. 14, Towson was demolished on the road by Alabama (82-54). Since that setback, the Tigers have done nothing but win, rattling off seven straight victories, including an 84-76 triumph against Coppin State last time out. This is part one of a two-game road swing for the Tigers, who visit Temple next.

Georgetown has been off for some time, with its last contest coming on Nov. 28 when it was topped by Butler, 64-58, as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. The Hoyas are 4-2 overall, having dropped a 68-65 decision against Wisconsin during the tourney as well. This begins a four-game homestand for the team, with the next test a big challenge against Kansas.

These teams last met during the 2012-13 season when Georgetown grinded out a 46-40 victory, its fourth in as many all-time meetings with Towson.

John Davis didn't start for Towson against Coppin State, but he certainly finished strong, scoring 23 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, both team-highs. The Tigers owned a 49-32 edge on the glass in the contest, which helped make up for a 36-6 scoring deficit from beyond the arc. It didn't hurt that Coppin State only made 39.1 percent of its shots overall.

Controlling the glass and limiting opposing shooters has been a staple of Towson's strong start. The Tigers are allowing only 59.9 points per game on 38.3 percent shooting, while collecting 42.4 rebounds per game. They are 18th nationally on the boards, while owning a plus-12.6 rebounding margin. Four McGlynn (14 ppg, 3.6 rpg) isn't much help in the rebounding department, but he serves as the team's top scoring threat. Davis (11.5 ppg, 9.1 rpg) is a double-double threat every night, despite playing 22.8 minutes per game, primarily as a reserve.

Georgetown really struggled to score against Butler, as the Bulldogs suffocated the Hoyas by clogging the interior and keeping the Hoyas from scoring close to the basket. In fact, Georgetown was outscored, 32-22, in the paint, while shooting just 41.5 percent from the field overall. Isaac Copeland came off the bench to score 16 points to pace the losing effort.

Normally, Georgetown is the team clamping down defensively, as they are letting up only 64.5 points per game on 38.1 percent shooting. They couple such strong defensive play with netting 71.7 points a contest on nearly 50 percent shooting. D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (14.2 ppg, 3.7 apg) is easily the most important player on the roster, as he leads the team in scoring and handles the ball on just about every possession. Joshua Smith (12.8 ppg, 6.8 rpg) is a solid second scoring option on the interior, while Jabril Trawick (6.8 ppg) and Mikael Hopkins (5.5 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 2.2 bpg) fill in the gaps.

Just a glance at the records of these teams might indicate Towson should be favored, but that will not be the case. Georgetown's two losses were hard- fought battles with ranked competition, while most of Towson's wins have come against lesser opponents.
