New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera scored a game-high 29 points as the Georgetown Hoyas claimed a 91-87 overtime victory against the Indiana Hoosiers as part of the Indeed Invitational at Madison Square Garden.
Smith-Rivera, who also notched four assists and four steals, shot 5-of-7 behind the 3-point line for the Hoyas (8-3) as they stretched their win streak to three in a row. Aaron Bowen gave the squad a lift off the bench with 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the floor, while Joshua Smith and Jabril Trawick posted 14 and 12 points, respectively, and combined for 13 rebounds.
The Hoosiers (10-3), who were playing away from home for just the third time this season, were led by Kevin Ferrell with 27 points, followed by Troy Williams with 23 points and eight rebounds, and James Blackmon Jr. 22 points stemming from 6-of-12 shooting behind the 3-point line. Robert Johnson chipped in with 11 points.
Indiana shot 44.4 percent from the floor in the first half, but the team helped itself tremendously with a 7-of-13 effort beyond the arc, earning the Hoosiers a 40-30 advantage at the break. The team also outscored the Hoyas 9-2 at the free-throw line.
In the second half the Indiana lead grew to 12 points in the opening moments, but Georgetown refused to go away and trimmed away at the deficit down the stretch. In fact, the Hoyas led by as many as five in the final minutes and by three with under 20 seconds to play, but a 3-pointer by Ferrell with 11 seconds remaining in regulation knotted the score at 77-77 and sent the meeting into overtime.
During the bonus session the Hoyas grabbed the early advantage and never looked back, leading by as many as seven points, as they held Indiana to just two field goals and 0-of-5 beyond the arc.
In a game that featured six ties and nine lead changes, Georgetown connected on 7-of-12 on the perimeter, but only 14-of-26 (.538) at the free-throw line.
With the victory the Hoyas have now tied the all-time series between the schools at two games apiece. The previous meeting was also on a neutral floor in New York at Barclays Center and went to overtime before the Hoosiers secured an 82-72 victory two seasons ago.
