Indiana (10-2) vs. Georgetown (7-3)
GAME NOTES: The Indiana Hoosiers will look to lengthen a three-game win streak as they travel to Madison Square Garden to take on the Georgetown Hoyas for a non-conference clash on Saturday.
Indiana boasts a 10-2 record this season, with a 9-1 mark at home in Bloomington. The Hoosiers have yet to play a game on the road, as they own a 1-1 mark at neutral site locations. Indiana took down New Orleans easily, 79-59, in the team's last outing.
Georgetown comes into the matchup with Indiana owning a 7-3 record this season, but has suffered two of those three losses at neutral sites. The Hoyas took down Radford (76-49) and Charlotte (81-78) in their last two contests.
These two national powers have deep individual histories, but have only met each other on the court three times. Indiana owns the 2-1 all-time advantage in the series, including an 82-72 overtime victory over the Hoyas in the last meeting.
Indiana was able to rattle off a strong first half against New Orleans that effectively buried the visiting squad early on in the game, as the Hoosiers took a 44-22 lead into halftime. Indiana finished the contest shooting 54.7 percent from the floor, and was led in scoring by Yogi Ferrell's 17 points. James Blackmon Jr. finished with 14 points in the game, and Hanner Mosquera- Perea chipped in with 12 points in the winning effort. Indiana held New Orleans to 1-of-13 shooting in the contest from 3-point range.
Indiana's scoring defense hasn't been all that strong this season, as the team allows 70.5 ppg to opponents. But the Hoosiers have been a dominant force on the other end of the floor, netting 86.3 ppg on 50.3 percent shooting from the floor. Blackmon leads a trio of players in double-digit scoring figures this season, netting 17.6 ppg for Indiana. He's followed up by Ferrell's 16.3 ppg, and Troy Williams' 12.7 ppg, although Williams has only played in 10 contests so far.
Georgetown gave away a seven-point halftime lead against Charlotte and allowed the 49ers to come back to make it a close contest in the final minutes of last Saturday's clash. However, the Hoyas held on down the stretch to defeat Charlotte by three points, thanks in large part to an 18-point effort by L.J. Peak, who led Georgetown in scoring. D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera contributed 13 points before fouling out, and Joshua Smith chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds in the win. Both Jabril Trawick and Aaron Bowen added 11 points, while Trawick pulled down 10 rebounds for the double-double.
On paper, it would seem Georgetown's 73.5 ppg average wouldn't be able to stack up with Indiana's offensive output. But the Hoyas are holding opponents to just 63.5 ppg this season, which means Georgetown could control the tempo of the game. The Hoyas will need solid efforts from Smith-Rivera (13.3 ppg) and Smith (12.7 ppg, 6.5 rpg) if they want to be successful. Peak comes in at third on the team in scoring, netting 10.2 ppg this season.
Georgetown's scoring defense could limit Indiana's potent offensive attack, but there's simply too much talent on the Hoosiers' roster for the team to give up a huge non-conference affair before conference play starts up.
