College of Charleston (1-3) vs. George Mason (1-3)
GAME NOTES: On the final day of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, the College of Charleston Cougars will contend with the George Mason Patriots at Coliseo Roberto Clemente.
The weekend has not been especially kind to Charleston, which dropped decisions to Connecticut (65-57) and Texas A&M (59-50) in their first two games of the event. The Cougars are just 1-3 overall, with a date against West Virginia, which also is competing in the field for this tourney, up next.
George Mason took losses in the first two games of this tourney as well, falling to West Virginia (91-65) and New Mexico (69-58). The Patriots are 1-3 overall as well, with their lone win coming by a 63-60 margin against Princeton. They will host Manhattan next Saturday.
The Cougars have won three of five all-time meetings with the Patriots. George Mason won the most recent affair, taking a 78-77 victory in the first round of the 2013 College Basketball Invitational.
In the loss to Texas A&M, Charleston shot an identical percentage from the floor as the Aggies (.367). However, the Cougars were on the wrong end of a 20-8 scoring differential from the free-throw line, while being out-rebounded, 36-31. Anthony Stitt and Joe Chealey each scored 10 points as the only double- digit scorers for the losing side.
Stitt (14.5 ppg) is playing 35 minutes per game, which leads the team and has given him ample opportunity to score. He has knocked down 10-of-22 attempts from 3-point range and shot 45.8 percent from the field overall. However, he leads the team in turnovers as well, with 15 total. Chealey (11 ppg) is only shooting at a 36.8 percent clip, although he does have more assists (12) than turnovers (eight). Adjehi Baru (12.7 ppg, 10 rpg) is a double-double threat every time out, but he hasn't blocked a shot yet this season.
George Mason dug itself an early hole that it could never get out of against New Mexico. The Patriots hit only 26.9 percent of their field goal attempts in the first half and finished with a 33.3 percent success rate at the end of the 11-point loss. They did manage to win the battle of the boards (38-36) by a slim margin, thanks to a monster game from Shevon Thompson (21 points, 19 rebounds).
Patrick Holloway (15.8 ppg) does very little beyond scoring, and he really had trouble doing that against New Mexico. He took more shots than anyone else on the floor for George Mason, but made only 3-of-17 attempts, including a miserable 1-of-11 effort from 3-point range, to wind up with nine points. Thompson (11.5 ppg, 11 rpg) has been much more consistent and will challenge for a double-double against most teams. Jalen Jenkins (8 ppg) is the next-best scorer on the roster, while Marquise Moore (5.7 ppg, 11 assists) is the top distributor.
Baru did not play against Texas A&M due to a bruised right knee. He is still listed as questionable, and if he is out again, the Cougars will have trouble keeping Thompson under wraps.
