Wofford (1-1) at Fairfield (1-1)
GAME NOTES: The Wofford Terriers take on sub-host Fairfield in round-robin play of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic inside Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard.
Wofford lost its season opener last Friday at Stanford in the regional host round, 74-59. But the Terriers, who play their basketball out of the Southern Confererence, followed that up with an early-morning home win over Iona on Tuesday, 86-73, as part of the 24-Hour Tip-Off Marathon. They'll wrap up the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic with back-to-back games against South Dakota and Sam Houston State this weekend.
Fairfield kicked off its season with a 71-63 triumph over Central Connecticut State last Friday in the Connecticut 6 Classic. But the very next day, the Stags were dealt a 109-59 setback by No. 4 Duke in the host round of this event. Like their counterpart, the Stags will also take on South Dakota and Sam Houston State as part of this weekend's sub-host round.
This game marks the first-ever meeting between these two programs.
Wofford found itself trailing Iona by three at intermission after the Gaels knocked down 7-of-12 3-point attempts in the opening stanza. But the Terriers had the hot hand in the second half as they shot 51.7 percent from the floor and made 6-of-11 threes. They also clamped down defensively, holding Iona to 37.5 percent shooting from the floor to outscore Iona by 16 over the final 20 minutes. The Gaels simply had no answer for Wofford's 22-8 run, which lasted nearly 10 minutes. Karl Cochran was 4-of-8 from the perimeter and paced four double-digit scorers with 20 points for the Terriers. Lee Skinner finished with 15 points and nine rebounds in the win.
Fairfield, a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, is led by Marcus Gilbert, who is averaging 18.0 points and 6.5 rebounds through two games. Coleman Johnson (14.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg) provides a spark off the bench, while Amadou Sidibe (9.0 ppg, 7.5 rpg) mans the paint. After posting a win in their season opener, the Stags were overwhelmed by national title contender Duke last Saturday at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils shot 65 percent from the floor, forced 18 turnovers and nearly doubled up Fairfield on the glass (39-20) in that game. The Stags were unable to keep pace as they were just 2-of-14 from 3-point range and shot less than 45 percent from the floor in each half. Gilbert scored a team-high 15 points in the loss.
In terms of how these teams stack up against one another, Wofford just beat MAAC preseason favorite Iona, a team the Stags must deal with later this season in conference play.
