Recap: East Carolina vs. Tulsa
Greenville, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - James Woodard had 17 points and Shaquille Harrison scored 13, as Tulsa held off the East Carolina Pirates, 66-64, in an American Athletic Conference tussle inside Minges Coliseum.
D'Andre Wright scored seven points and pulled down 10 rebounds to help the Golden Hurricane (14-5, 7-0 AAC) run their win streak to nine in a row and remain unbeaten in league play under first-year head coach Frank Haith.
The Pirates (8-11, 1-5) lost for the fifth time in six games since conference play began, although they are the only AAC team so far to eclipse 60 points against first-place Tulsa. Terry Whisnant led all scorers with 22 points in the loss, Michel-Ofik Nzege recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Antonio Robinson finished with 10 points and six assists.
ECU led by as many as eight late in the first half thanks to six 3-pointers in the opening frame. Conversely, Tulsa made only 1-of-12 attempts from the perimeter and trailed, 35-29, at the break.
But the Golden Hurricane turned things around in the second half by shooting 5-of-9 from beyond the arc and 50 percent from the floor. They led by as many as eight with nine minutes remaining in regulation, although ECU came back to tie the game at 61-61 on Nzege's dunk at the 2:09 mark. However, Tulsa answered with five straight points at the foul line to end the threat.
Both teams shot 41 percent from the floor, but Tulsa held a key 20-6 scoring advantage at the charity stripe for the game.
