Tulsa (13-5) at East Carolina (8-10)
GAME NOTES: The Tulsa Golden Hurricane hope to continue their dominance against the rest of the American Athletic Conference as they invade Minges Coliseum to take on the East Carolina Pirates.
Coach Frank Haith led the Golden Hurricane to a 73-55 victory over Memphis on Wednesday. The win improved Tulsa to 6-0 in the AAC and extended its current winning streak to eight games. The Golden Hurricane have held each of their first six conference foes under 60 points, including the defending national champion Connecticut Huskies, who netted only 58 points. In conference play, Tulsa has outscored the opposition by just under 12 ppg. Tulsa has won 17 straight conference games dating back to last season.
The Pirates are hoping to bounce back from the 77-54 loss they were handed by SMU on their trip to Dallas last weekend. The setback was the fourth in five games for ECU since entering conference play. Coach Jeff Lebo's team has gone 1-1 at home in AAC play and 7-2 at Minges Coliseum on the campaign. ECU is ranked seventh in the conference in scoring offense with an average of 66.5 ppg, and is one spot lower in scoring defense with an allowance of 67.2 ppg. The Pirates are posting more than 76 ppg on 49.5 percent efficiency from the floor at home.
This will be the 14th meeting in history between Tulsa and East Carolina, with the former owning an 11-2 series lead. The Pirates have lost three straight to the Golden Hurricane at home, and are seeking their first win over Tulsa at Minges Coliseum since 2006.
The Golden Hurricane were very efficient en route to their 18-point win over Memphis. Tulsa finished with a 40-36 edge in total rebounds and committed only six turnovers, compared to 17 by the Tigers. As a result, the Golden Hurricane attempted 14 more field goals and 19 more free throws. Shaquille Harrison led the Golden Hurricane with 18 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals. James Woodard scored 16 points, and Rashad Smith had 14 points and seven rebounds, and Rashad Ray contributed nine points and three assists. Woodard, Harrison and Smith are averaging a combined 39.4 ppg, making them the highest scoring trio in the AAC. Defensively, Tulsa has held 17 of its 18 opponents this season under 50 percent shooting from the floor, and it paces the AAC in field goal percentage defense (.385).
ECU was outscored by double digits in both halves of its recent loss to SMU. The Pirates were limited to 35.8 percent shooting from the field, which included an 11-of-30 performance from 3-point range. They committed 16 turnovers and were outscored, 11-5, at the free-throw line. Terry Whisnant played the entire contest and tallied 24 points. Caleb White chipped in with 14 points and five assists, while Michel-Ofik Nzege contributed eight points and 10 boards. ECU has the second-highest scoring trio in the AAC, as Whisnant, White and B.J. Tyson average a combined 38.9 ppg.
Harrison and Woodard have quietly formed one of the nation's best backcourts. Tulsa has not missed a beat with Haith taking over the program for Danny Manning, who departed for Wake Forest after leading the Golden Hurricane to the Conference USA championship last season. Tulsa has a very good chance of entering February with a perfect AAC record thanks to a favorable schedule over its next four games.
