Duquesne (5-6) at Dayton (10-2)
GAME NOTES: The Duquesne Dukes and the Dayton Flyers will kick off their respective Atlantic 10 Conference schedules against one another on Saturday afternoon at UD Arena.
Duquesne is coming off a 78-72 home win over Texas-Pan American on Tuesday. This is the lone road contest in a span of seven games for the Dukes, who are just 1-3 outside of the Palumbo Center so far this season.
Dayton has won three straight and eight of nine, including Tuesday's 78-74 decision over Ole Miss. That outcome improved the Flyers to 7-0 at UD Arena this season as they will now close out a four-game homestand.
UD leads the all-time series with Duquesne, 47-22. The Flyers have won 28 of 34 meetings on their homecourt.
In the Dukes' win over UTPA, they had six players score in double figures for the first time since November 2011. Micah Mason scored all of his team-high 14 points during the second half, and his four free throws in the final 14 seconds helped seal the outcome. Sophomore center Darius Lewis got his first career start and finished with a personal-best 11 points and five blocks. Dominique McKoy had 12 points and nine rebounds, both season-highs.
Mason (11.0 ppg) has teamed with Derrick Colter (12.2 ppg) to form one of the nation's deadliest starting backcourts from the perimeter. Colter (30-of-52, .577) and Mason (32-of-70, .457) are shooting a combined .508 from 3-point range, with Colter's percentage leading the nation through Dec. 30. Jordan Stevens (12.0 ppg) is also averaging double figures for DU.
Dayton is led by preseason All-A-10 senior guard Jordan Sibert, who is averaging 15.7 points and 4.1 rebounds. Dyshawn Pierre is putting up 11.8 ppg and 6.3 rpg, while Kendall Pollard (10.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg) and Devon Scott (9.1 ppg, 7.4 rpg) have also made steady contributions on the glass. The Flyers lost 6-9 junior Devon Scott (9.1, 7-4) and 6-9 sophomore Jalen Robinson (3.2, 2.4) to suspension on Dec. 17. Scott started the team's first nine games.
In their latest victory, the Flyers limited Ole Miss to 41.8-percent shooting and held a key 15-6 edge in points off turnovers. Still, the Rebels became only the second team this season to score 70 or more against Dayton. Sibert scored a game-high 20 points in the win. Pierre was next in line with 17 points, followed by Pollard with 12 and Kyle Davis with 11.
Historically, UD Arena has been a tough venue for opposing teams, and the 2014-15 season has been no different to this point. When these teams met last season, the Flyers overcame an 18-point deficit to win at CONSOL Energy Center.
