UNC-Wilmington (2-1) at Davidson (3-1)
GAME NOTES: Finishing off a four-game road trip to tip off the 2014-15 campaign, the UNCW Seahawks find themselves matched up against the Davidson Wildcats in non-conference action at Belk Arena.
Since losing to Old Dominion in Virginia is the season opener, 76-56, the Seahawks have rattled off a couple of victories. First the team defeated UNC Greensboro last week, 84-72, and then it took down VMI in a wild offensive affair last Saturday, 110-93.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats have had some easy targets on their schedule, defeating the likes of Catholic and Campbell in the first two games, before being pummeled by nationally-ranked North Carolina, 90-72. Following the setback against the Tar Heels, Davidson responded with a 95-69 thrashing of UCF on the road three nights ago.
The Seahawks have won five of the previous eight meetings in the series, although Davidson posted a 77-61 triumph in the most recent clash two seasons ago.
Freddie Jackson led five players in double figures as he tallied a career-high 26 points as UNCW dominated in the paint against VMI at Cameron Hall in Lexington. Cedrick Williams had 23 points and 12 boards for a double-double, matching Jackson on the glass as UNCW connected on 59.5 percent from the floor and tied a school record with 47 field goals. Addison Spruill added 20 points, Malik Pugh 16 off the bench and Craig Ponder 10 in the triumph.
Scoring 83.3 ppg through the first three outings of the season. there are five players scoring at least 10.0 ppg for the Seahawks, beginning with Ponder and Jackson who have an identical 16.7 ppg as they both shoot at least 50 percent from the field. Spruill, who is connecting on 55.2 percent of his shots, checks in with 13.3 ppg and Williams, at 66.7 percent, adds another 11.0 ppg. As a team, UNCW is converting field goals at an impressive 52.7 percent clip.
Jack Gibbs used UCF for target practice as he made good on all but two of his 17 field goal tries as he finished with a game-high 37 points the last time out. Gibbs was 5-of-7 behind the 3-point line and also found opportunities to clear six rebounds. Tyler Kalinoski also made five triples as he tallied 25 points, followed by reserve Nathan Ekwu with 11 points and six boards for a squad that shot 53.6 percent from the field and held the hosts to just 4-of-22 out on the perimeter.
Despite the massive outing by Gibbs, he is still scoring just 16.5 ppg for the season. Kalinoski, who is shooting better behind the 3-point line (.452) than he is from the floor overall (.434), is close behind with his 16.0 ppg for a program generating a hefty 88.8 ppg and limiting foes to only 69.0 ppg.
Even though the Seahawks had a huge game against VMI, they should understand that the style of play by the Keydets lends itself to wild scoring affairs. Points will be harder to come by this weekend and as such, so will a victory.
