Georgia State (1-) at Colorado State (1-0)
GAME NOTES: The first-ever meeting between the Colorado State Rams and the Georgia State Panthers is set for Moby Arena on Friday night.
The Rams, who operate as a member of the Mountain West Conference, are playing just their second game of the campaign, having defeated Montana in the season opener last weekend, 83-66.
The Panthers are on to their third game of the 2014-15 season, coming off a disappointing 81-58 loss to 14th-ranked Iowa State on Monday. A week ago, Georgia State kicked off the season with a resounding 115-55 victory against Tennessee Temple, a game in which the stats will serve to buoy the team's averages for weeks to come.
After blowing out Tennessee Temple, the Panthers got a taste of their own medicine versus the Cyclones, shooting only 39.1 percent from the floor, including 5-of-19 behind the 3-point line. R.J. Hunter shot 8-of-20 from the field and finished with a game-high 21 points, but the supporting cast didn't do nearly enough to keep GSU competitive.
Ryan Harrow and Markus Crider chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively, the latter also clearing a team-best eight rebounds, but coming up with a weak effort was transfer Kevin Ware with a mere four points on 1-of-6 shooting.
After two games, Hunter is averaging 22.5 ppg, hitting 9-of-20 attempts behind the 3-point line, followed by Harrow with his 18.5 ppg. Between the two top scorers, they've also handed out 23 assists, which means the rest of the GSU roster has handed out 17 assists.
The Rams won their 34th consecutive home opener by crushing visiting Montana by 17 points. The hosts hit on not only 51.9 percent from the floor, but also 12-of-27 beyond the arc in the outing. Stanton Kidd paced five players in double figures with his 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-4 out on the perimeter. Daniel Bejarano came up a rebound shy of a double-double with his 15 points, to go along with five assists. Reserves Gian Clavell and John Gillon accounted for 13 and 11 points, respectively, while J.J. Avila posted 10 points and seven rebounds before fouling out.
Perhaps the most impressive stat for Colorado State in the first game of the season, outside of holding Montana to a mere 6-of-24 shooting on the outside, was the fact that the Rams issued 22 assists on 27 made field goals, certainly a good sign for team work.
The Panthers have to be careful believing their own hype after the first game of the season, but even if they've come back to reality the chances of the visitors picking up a win in this meeting is slim to none if Ware again struggles.
